Construction of a Self-efficacy Scale for Measuring the
Impact of Ontological Coaching in Management Practice
Sabiha Sultana
This paper is based on the first phase of PhD project in which a selfefficacy scale has been constructed for measuring the validity of
ontological coaching in management practice. Ontological coaching is
based on the idea of “conversations for action.” Conversations for action
includes a whole set of practices that are designed to develop a culture of
innovation, trust, engagement and excitement in an organisation.
Anecdotally there is much evidence that demonstrates the value of
ontological coaching however, no empirical testing of its practices has yet
taken place. The reason of constructing a new scale was the absence of
an existing relevant scale that could serve the purpose of assessment.
Self-efficacy scales have been found as valid measures for the
assessment of organisational training. A meta-analysis of 114 studies by
Stajkovic & Luthans, (1998) reported that two decades of research showed
a positive relationship between self-efficacy and motivational, behavioural
outcomes in organisational, educational and clinical settings. Empirical
research over the last decade found positive relationship between selfefficacy and a variety of work performance measures including managerial
performance (Wood, Bandura & Bailey, 1990). A network of certified
ontological coaches established the content validity of scale. Later, it was
pilot tested on a sample of MBA executive students to ensure its smooth
execution in the main study. Scale was further revised after the analysis of
their responses and feedback. In the second phase of this project , a
quasi-experimental field study will be carried out with middle managers
where the impact of ontological coaching (training) will be assessed by a
pre-test post-test design.
