City of Charlotte Policy for Sustainable City Facilities Evaluation of CATS’ Proposed Special Transportation Services (STS) Facility at 910 North Alexander Street Policy Intent The policy is intended to direct City staff to design, construct, and operate sustainable City facilities which meet the functionally and service delivery needs of the citizens of Charlotte while minimizing environmental impacts and conserving and protecting all resources. Sustainable Priorities The six Sustainable Priorities pertinent to facilities are listed below along with sustainability goals that are specific to the STS Facility at 910 North Alexander Street. Preserve Land & Trees Conserve Clean Water Resources Reduce Energy Use & Carbon Footprint Maximize Transportation Alternatives Lead By Example & Encourage Local Sustainable Industry Protect Occupant Health, Maximize Productivity & Encourage Sustainable Employee Behaviors December 15, 2009 CATS has taken a comprehensive approach to site selection that has resulted in a site that uses the least land 3.65 acres vs. 15 acres at a suburban site Utilizes existing infrastructure: Shared Fuel Farm Shared Fleet Wash Shared Parking Preserves Tree Canopy Minimizes Heat Island effect with smaller footprint STS Facility will be designed to meet or surpass the established goals to reduce: Indoor water usage 20% below State Code requirement Outdoor water usage 50% below State Code requirement STS Facility will be designed to meet or surpass the established goal to reduce: New facility energy consumption calculation 30% below ASHRAE requirement STS Facility is supported by existing Infrastructure. STS Facility is served by two bus routes; the 3-Plaza and the 23-Shamrock. STS Facility is within ½ mile of 10 of the 22 Basic services defined by LEED’s Community Connectivity goal.
