INTERNATIONAL TELECOMMUNICATION UNION ICT&CC Joint Coordination Activity (JCA- ICT&CC) TELECOMMUNICATION STANDARDIZATION SECTOR Doc 79 English only STUDY PERIOD 2009-2012 Original: English Geneva, 12 April 2012 Source: Coordinator for ISO/IEC JTC 1 Title: Progress status of ISO/IEC JTC 1 on Green ICT matters 1. Introduction ISO/IEC JTC 1 studied on Green ICT matters to find future standardization initiatives. This document summarizes progress results of JTC 1. 2. Progress history Initially ISO/IEC JTC 1 took “Green IT” to study for its future standardization area at its 2008 Plenary meeting and assigned the study item to JTC 1 Special Working Group on Planning (SWGP). SWG-P delivered its study report, “A standardization initiative for Green ICT” to the 2009 JTC 1 Plenary meeting. The 2009 JTC 1 Plenary meeting established two Study Groups and one SWG as follows: Study Group on Green ICT Study Group on Energy Efficiency of Data Centers Special Working Group on Smart Grid The clause 5 of JCA-ICT&CC Doc 23 includes a summary of their activities. JTC 1 reconstituted those two Study Groups at its 2010 Plenary meeting because they had one-year life between JTC 1 Plenary meetings. The clause 5 of JCA-ICT&CC Doc 46 includes a summary of their activities conducted in 2011. Finally in November 2011, JTC 1 established Sub-Committee 39, “Sustainability for and by Information Technology.” JCA-ICT&CC Doc 77 includes specification information on this establishment. 3. Current status Currently four study items are on the New Work Item Proposal (NWIP) ballot process at JTC 1/SC 39 as follows: Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) and Data Center Infrastructure Efficiency (DCiE) Contact: Yong-Woon KIM ETRI Korea (Republic of) Tel: +82 42 860 6503 Fax: +82 42 861 5404 Email: qkim@etri.re.kr Attention: This is not a publication made available to the public, but an internal ITU-T Document intended only for use by the Member States of ITU, by ITU-T Sector Members and Associates, and their respective staff and collaborators in their ITU related work. The first JTC 1/SC 39 meeting will be held in Redwood Shores, California, USA, June 12 – 14, 2012, where it will constitute its work group(s). With following the cooperation philosophy, “Guide for ITU-T and ISO/IEC JTC1 cooperation,” of ITU-T A.23 and ISO/IEC JTC 1 Standing Document 3, the NWIP on “Best Practices for Green Data Centers” has been proposed as a joint project between JTC 1/SC 39 and ITU-T SG 5 according to liaison activities of JTC 1 and ITU-T SG 5 and their consensus where the liaison activities are shown at JCA-ICT&CC Doc 45 and TD 989 Rev.1 (GEN/5). The first item on “Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) and Data Center Infrastructure Efficiency (DCiE)” corresponds to the Key Performance Indicator item for green data centers. It may be another cooperation item between both groups and also with ETSI TC EE. _____________________
