PEER MENTOR JOB DESCRIPTION
Qualifications:
Possess at least a 3.25 GPA and have completed at least 12 units at VVC
Have a stated goal of transfer to a four year college or university
Must be able to commit to at least one year
Must complete fingerprinting/background check (no cost to student)
Have a broad understanding of campus resources and how to access them
Have a friendly, welcoming attitude and dedication to assisting students
Be dependable, responsible, and professional
Have strong interpersonal communication skills
Duties & Responsibilities:
Establish a “big sister/brother” relationship with mentees by meeting in person for one hour
each week during the mentee’s first semester in Puente and in person for two hours twice per
month during the mentee’s second semester in the program.
Host activities (in collaboration with the Puente Club officers) which allow for relationship
building.
Provide support to mentees who are acclimating to college and need to build personal and
social support networks.
Introduce mentees to ways to get involved in campus life and community service.
Serve as a resource to mentees who need assistance in locating and using academic support
resources and in building relationships with instructors.
Using acquired experience and knowledge of college life, provide personal support and
guidance to mentees.
Training & Support:
New mentor training – Friday, September 16th, 9am to 5pm
Attend peer mentor meetings with advisors twice per month
Participate in mentor support trainings, workshops and meetings as scheduled
Starting/Ending Dates:
One full academic year – Fall and Spring semesters. (Some hours may be required during Winter and
Summer term for refresher training).
