Corporate Environmental Disclosures: An Analysis of
Stakeholders’ Expectations

Corporate environmental disclosures are business response to the concept of
sustainable development. Corporate Sector is the major consumer of environmental
resources and must be accountable towards environment. In the modern times
corporate sector adopt certain voluntary activities to protect environment .Public
reporting of these voluntary activities is called environmental disclosures. Many
Indian companies such as ITC, Godrej, Hindustan Lever Limited, Reliance etc. are
also adopting these voluntary environmental activities. According to stakeholder
theory, the environmental information which is disclosed voluntarily by companies is
due to demand of various stakeholders who are interested in the behaviour of
company. Stakeholders include shareholders, Managers, Customers, Professional
etc. This study concentrates on analysing stakeholders expectations about corporate
environmental disclosures. The results in this paper presents the analysis of
stakeholders expectations about different environmental disclosure variable such as
environment commitment policy ,environment management structure ,resource
usage, conservation ,environment accounting and auditing , training and awareness
for environment. The study further explores difference in stakeholders’ expectations
on the basis of different demographic variables. The results reveal that most of the
stakeholders consider environmental information important. For element like
corporate vision for environment, separate environment policy, environmental friendly
products and packaging, environmental concern in suppliers’ procurement, water
management etc. expectations of the stakeholders found to be very high. There has
also be found significant difference in the environment expectations on the basis of
gender, qualification and investment.
