PRESS RELEASE
February 19, 2016
Volunteers Sought for District 158 Programs
HUNTLEY, IL – Huntley Community School District 158 seeks volunteers for several upcoming
opportunities within its schools.
Young Authors Judging
Young Authors is an optional literary program, completed at home, that is offered to all Kindergarten-8th
grade students in District 158. Participating in Young Authors puts into practice (in a fun way) the writing
process that students use during the school day. The students who participate in this writing competition
will have their books judged by a panel of community volunteers. One book will be chosen to represent
each school and registered for the state conference at Illinois State University in May.
Judging for Middle School grades will take place Tuesday, March 1, from 9:00 a.m.-noon. at Heineman
Middle School (Square Barn Road Campus).
Judging for Elementary (K-5) grades will take place Wednesday, March 2, from 9:00 a.m-noon at
Mackeben Elementary (Square Barn Road Campus).
Battle of the Books
This year two elementary schools, Conley and Leggee, will participate in Battle of the Books, a national
reading incentive program that encourages students to have fun reading quality literature and work toward
a common goal with peers. The competition is a tournament in which teams earn points by answering
questions about 30 different books they have read.
Many Community Volunteers will be needed to serve as Facilitators for these events. As a volunteer
Facilitator, you will be the person asking the students the questions (all prepared for you). You can
choose to participate on one day or all three days if your schedule allows.
Dates:
• Friday, May 13, 8:15-11:45 a.m.: Conley Elementary (5th Grade)
•

Early Childhood Center Library Cart
The District 158 Early Childhood Center (formerly known as the Preschool) is in need of several
“grandma” volunteers to help with their “Library on a Cart” program. Volunteers will take the cart to
classrooms and after they read a story to the children they will help scan the books that children check out
from the cart to take home and read.
Days/Times:
•
Tuesdays: 10:45 a.m.-12:15 p.m. (2 classes)
•
Wednesdays: 10:45 a.m.-1:15 p.m. (3 classes)
