Mr. Matt Erickson
Economist
American Farm Bureau Federation
600 Maryland Avenue, SW, Suite 10000W
Washington, DC 20024
Dear Mr. Erickson,
Subsequent to our telephone conversation last week, I have been following the Farm Bureau’s website and current
events with great interest. Because I have taken a strong liking to environmental and agricultural economics, the
recent article about the EPA’s greenhouse gas regulation and its fiscal effects quickly grabbed my attention. What I
found particularly engaging was the fact that this article mirrors the concepts and ideas that we are currently
discussing in my Community, Environment, and Development (CED) class, and this class is the foundation upon
which my major is built. Established only a few years ago, the CED major brings together economics, sociology, and
environmental and agricultural science to give students a comprehensive background of issues that our community
faces. I am interested in extending the knowledge that I have gained in my courses beyond the classroom and into
practical, hands-on experience through an internship at the Farm Bureau.
Currently, I serve as a teaching assistant in an introductory-level agribusiness management course. My task is to
assess students’ work and assign appropriate grades, answer questions that students might have about the topics
taught, and conduct office hours. Holding this position requires me to be very comfortable with the course material,
which includes the relationship between economics, the global agri-food system, production, and consumption.
Additionally, I am a skilled and confident writer who has had recent practice composing research papers, informative
pieces, and scientifically based documents in the form of lab reports. I also exhibit strong leadership,
communication, and organizational skills. Furthermore, I am very comfortable using Microsoft Excel.
Please accept my application for the summer intern position. I am a competent, well-rounded candidate whose
abilities and skills will be a great asset to your team. I did notice that housing is not provided, but if I am fortunate
enough to be offered the position, I have already successfully addressed accommodations. I look forward to further
discussing my qualifications and interest in the internship. You can contact me at 610-555-9176 or nlion@psu.edu
and I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Sincerely,
Nittany Lion
