SODIUM BENZOATE Ref. No. MSDS /PD/9_01 Valid for: 2 years from approval First Aid Measures General measures: Use proper personal protective equipment. Skin contact: Immediately flush skin with plenty of water. Apply an emollient on the irritated area. Remove contaminated clothes and shoes. Wash clothing and clean shoes before reuse. Seek medical attention. Serious skin contact: Wash affected area with a disinfectant soap, and cover the area with an antibacterial cream if necessary. Seek medical attention. Eye contact: Check for and remove any contact lenses. Immediately flush eyes with plenty of cold water for at least 15 minutes, lifting lower and upper eyelids occasionally. Seek medical attention. Ingestion: Do not induce emesis unless told to do so by medical personnel. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Loosen tight clothing such as a collar, tie, belt or waistband. Get medical attention if symptoms appear. Serious indigestion: N/A Inhalation: Remover to fresh air. If person is not breathing, give artificial respiration. If person is finding it difficult to breathe, give oxygen. Seek medical attention. Serious inhalation: N/A Page 3 of 9 UNIVERSITY OF MALTA FACULTY OF MEDICINE & SURGERY PHARMACY DEPARTMENT MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEET 5. SODIUM BENZOATE Ref. No. MSDS /PD/9_01 Valid for: 2 years from approval Accidental Release Measures NB: Wear appropriate protective equipment/clothing including gloves before removing any spills. Small spill: Sweep up, absorb spill using appropriate tools in order to place material into a convenient waste disposal container. Clean area by spreading water over contaminated surface and dispose of according to local authority requirements. Large spill: Use a shovel to place material into a convenient waste disposal container. Clean area by spreading water over contaminated surface and allow to evacuate through the sanitary system. 7. Handling and Storage Precautions: Keep container under lock and key, away from heat and away from sources of ignition. Empty containers pose a fire risk; evaporate any residue under a fume hood. Ground all equipment containing the material. Do not ingest or breathe any dust particles. Avoid contact with eyes and skin. Use proper personal protective equipment. If ingested, seek medical advice immediately and show the container or the label. Do not leave the substance close to incompatibles such as oxidizing agents. Storage: Keep container tightly closed in a cool, well-ventilated area. Hygroscopic substance.
