B.PHARM. (HONS.) COURSE BYE-LAWS
Bye-Laws of 2005 in terms of the General Regulations for University Undergraduate
Awards, 2004 for the Degree of Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) - B.Pharm. (Hons) under the auspices of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery
IN exercise of the powers conferred upon him by sections 30(5) and 31(6) of the Education
Act (Cap. 327), the Chancellor of the University of Malta has promulgated the following
bye-laws made by the Board of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery in virtue of the powers
conferred upon it by section 37 (1) of the said Act and which have been approved by the
Senate of the University of Malta as required by section 37 (2) of the said Act:
Citation and Interpretation
1. (1) These bye-laws may be cited as the Bye-Laws of 2005 in terms of the General
Regulations for University Undergraduate Awards, 2004 for the degree of Bachelor of
Pharmacy (Honours) - B.Pharm. (Hons) - under the auspices of the Faculty of Medicine
and Surgery.
(2) In these bye-laws, unless the context otherwise requires "the Board" means the Board of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery;
"the Course" means the programme of studies leading to the degree of Bachelor of
Pharmacy (Honours) - B.Pharm. (Hons);
"the Degree" means the degree of Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) - B.Pharm. (Hons);
and
"the Principal Regulations" means the General Regulations for University Undergraduate
Awards, 2004.
Applicability
2. These bye-laws shall be applicable for courses commencing in October 2003 or later.
Area of Study
3. The Degree may be awarded in Pharmacy as the Main Honours area of study.
Special Course Requirements for Admission
For courses commencing up to October 2011:
4. To be registered as regular students in the Course, applicants shall, apartfrom
satisfying the general requirements for admission as specified in the Admission
Regulations of the University, be in possession of the special course requirements listed
hereunder:
(a) a pass at Advanced Matriculation Level at Grade C or better in Chemistry; and
(b) one pass at Advanced Matriculation Level and one pass at Intermediate Matriculation
Level, in both cases at Grade C or better, in two subjects chosen from Applied or Pure
Mathematics, Biology, Computing, English, Philosophy, Physics.

For courses commencing in October 2012 or later:
4. To be registered as regular students in the Course, applicants shall, apart from
satisfying the general requirements for admission as specified in the Admission
Regulations of the University, be in possession of the special course requirements listed
hereunder:
(a) a pass at Advanced Matriculation Level at Grade C or better in Chemistry;
(b) a pass at Advanced Matriculation Level at Grade C or better in one of the following
subjects: Biology, Computing, English, Philosophy, Physics; and
(c) a pass at Intermediate Matriculation Level at Grade C in Pure Mathematics.
Course Duration
5. The Course shall extend over a period of five years of full-time study.
Course Programme
6. The programme of studies for the Course shall be published in accordance with the
provisions of the Principal Regulations, after approval by Senate, and shall include:
(a) theoretical and practical training in the following subjects:
· Plant and animal biology;
· Physics;
· General and inorganic chemistry;
· Organic chemistry;
· Analytical chemistry;
· Medicinal and pharmaceutical chemistry, including analysis of medicinal products;
· General and applied biochemistry;
· Anatomy, histology and physiology, medical terminology;
· Microbiology;
· Pharmacy Practice;
· Pharmacology and pharmacotherapy;
· Pharmaceutical technology, Pharmaceutics;
· Toxicology;
· Pharmacognosy;
· Legislation and professional ethics;
(b) at least six months of in-service training in a pharmacy open to the public or in a
hospital under the supervision of the pharmaceutical department of that hospital; and
(c) a dissertation on an aspect of practical pharmacy approved by the Head of Department.
Classification of the Award
7. The Final Weighted Average Mark for the classification of the Degree shall be based on
the results obtained in each year of the Course, which shall be weighted according to the
following criteria:

Second Year Average Mark - 10%
Third Year Average Mark - 10%
Fourth Year Average Mark - 20%
Fifth Year Average Mark - 50%.
