Soybean performance tests are conducted each year to provide information on the relative performance of new and established varieties and brands at several locations in Kansas. Entries were grouped according to their time of maturity into two or three tests in order to facilitate harvest and to improve the precision of yield measurements. Maturity information used to separate entries was provided by the entrant. Seeds for tests are from certified growers, agricultural experiment stations, and private seed companies (Table 1). Seed quality, including such factors as purity and germination, can be important in determining the performance of a variety. Soybean seed used for public and private entries in the Kansas Crop Performance Tests is prepared professionally and usually meets or exceeds Kansas Crop Improvement Certification standards. Relative performance of a given variety comparable to that obtained in these tests is best assured under similar environmental conditions and cultural practices and with the use of certified or professionally prepared seed. All companies known to be developing and marketing soybean varieties or brands are invited to submit test seed; interested companies enter on a voluntary, feeentry basis. Results from a specialized test are included in this report for the second time. For the past several years, Experiment Station personnel have conducted trials to evaluate the performance of soybean varieties when grown in soil infested with soybean cyst nematode (SCN). This year, interested companies submitted entries in this test on a voluntary, fee-entry basis. A summary of results for the past 4 years is included in Table 14 (Cherokee County). Entries resistant and susceptible to SCN are evaluated in these trials. DATA INTERPRETATION Yields are recorded as bushels per acre (60 pounds per bushel) adjusted to 13% moisture content, when moisture data are available. Seed yield also is expressed as a percentage of the test average to assist in identifying entries that consistently produce better than the average yield. Entries were planted in four-row plots with rows 30 inches apart and replicated three or four times each. Seeding rate ranged from eight to 10 seeds per foot of row. The center two rows of each plot were harvested for yield estimates at all locations, except Finney County where all four rows were harvested. Harvested row lengths ranged from 14 to 30 feet, depending on location. Cultural practices used and rainfall received at each test location are given in Table 2. Results from this year's tests, compared with those from previous years, are presented in Tables 3 through 12. Maturity is the date on which 95% of the pods have ripened (browned). Delayed leaf drop and green stems are not considered when assigning maturity. Maturity is expressed as days earlier (-) or later (+) than the average date of the reference variety. About 1 week of good drying weather after maturing is needed before soybeans are ready to harvest. 1 This publication from the Kansas State University Agricultural Experiment Station and Cooperative Extension Service has been archived. Current information is available from http://www.ksre.ksu.edu. Lodging is rated at maturity by the following scores: be used to compare the yield of entries in different maturity groups. For example, the yield of an entry in the group III test at Brown County may be compared with the yield of an entry in the group IV test at the same location to determine if they are statistically different. 1 - Almost all plants erect 2 - All plants slightly leaning or a few plants down 3 - All plant leaning moderately (45%) or 25 to 50% of plants down 4 - All plants leaning considerably or 50 to 80% plants down 5 - Almost all plants down The coefficient of variability (CV) represents an estimate of the precision in the replicated yield trials. A CV of less than 10% indicates a good test with a high level of reliability. CVs ranging from 10 to 15% are usually acceptable for performance comparisons. CVs greater than 15% generally lack sufficient precision to provide any more than a rough guide to cultivar performance. In those tests in which the precision was insufficient to statistically compare performance among the entries, the LSD value has been replaced with the designation, NS, indicating that seed yields were not significantly different. Height is the average length from the soil surface to the top of the main stem of mature plants. VARIETY OR BRAND SELECTION Performance of soybean varieties or brands varies from year to year and from location to location, depending on such factors as weather, management practices, and variety adaptation. When selecting varieties or brands, one should carefully analyze their performance for 2 or more years across locations. Performance averaged over several years will provide a better estimate of genetic potential and stability than will 1 year's information. 1994 ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS Brown County: Timely rainfall during the seed-fill period produced moderate yields. No disease or insect problems were noted in the plots. Shawnee County: Moderate rainfall coupled with supplemental irrigation substantially increased yields compared with those of the previous season. A major wind storm struck the area on July 1, but the soybean plots appeared to suffer little damage. Small differences in yield between any two varieties or brands usually are not important. Within maturity groups at each location, an LSD (least significant difference) was calculated. The significance level used to calculate the LSD in 1994 was 10%. This is a less conservative value compared to the significance level of 5% used in previous years. Unless two varieties differ in yield by more than the LSD, genetic yield potential of one entry cannot be considered superior to that of another. At the sites where entries were grouped by maturity, an additional LSD value is listed at the bottom of the table. This LSD value may Franklin County: Planting was delayed by early season rainfall. Growing conditions during the remainder of the season were generally favorable, with timely moisture. Labette County: Rainfall in May and June was well below normal, but excellent growing conditions in July and August produced 50 bu/acre yields by some entries. 2 This publication from the Kansas State University Agricultural Experiment Station and Cooperative Extension Service has been archived. Current information is available from http://www.ksre.ksu.edu. Republic County: The Belleville test experienced severe drought stress in August and early September. Yields were depressed compared with results from the 1992 and 1993 trials, but yields of several entries exceeded 30 bu/acre. With irrigation, top yields were achieved at the Scandia site. Cherokee County: The soybean cyst nematode (SCN) population continued to be high at this site. Yields of susceptible varieties (e.g. Flyer, Essex, Stafford) continue to be about 40% lower than those of resistant entries. Yields at this location were slightly lower than those in the Labette test primarily because of a dry period during August. Harvey County: Rainfall amounts were well above average for the first 2 months after planting. Soybeans showed excellent yield potential through mid-August. Drought became increasingly severe from late August through September and caused premature termination of seed filling. Thomas County: Dry but good growing conditions existed at this site. Finney County: Above average rainfall and near normal temperatures occurred during this growing season. Herbicide drift of Roundup/2,4-D once in July and again in August did result in some foliar damage, but yield levels were high. Stafford County: Hot, dry, and windy conditions prevailed throughout the season. Weed control was excellent this year, and yields were 8-10 bu/acre higher than those of last year. 3 This publication from the Kansas State University Agricultural Experiment Station and Cooperative Extension Service has been archived.
