Dr.HeidiSwartsreceivedherB.A.fromOberlinCollege,aMasterof
DivinityfromHarvardUniversity,andaPh.D.inGovernmentfrom
CornellUniversity.Currentlyanindependentscholarandconsultant,
Dr.SwartshastaughtatSyracuseUniversityandatRutgers
University–Newarkcampus.Heracademicscholarshipandteaching
and“real‐world”experiencemutuallyinformeachother.Sheisa
lifelongUnitarian‐Universalist(andsince1999,anordainedminister)whoseexposureto
religiously‐rootedactivisminspiredherscholarshiponreligioninAmericansocial
movements.HerexperienceasacommunityorganizerinSanFrancisco’sskidrow,the
Tenderloin,gaverisetoquestionsaboutdifferentcommunityorganizingmodelsaddressed
inherresearch.
