European Broadcasting Union Union Européenne de Radio-Télévision Implementation Task Force ITF03007_2 2003-10-19 Abstract of paper to be given to the ITU-T Workshop on standardization in telecommunications for motor vehicles 2003-11-24/25 Title: TPEG technology offers extensive in-vehicle information capability TPEG technology has been developed over the last few years by a consortium of broadcasters and consumer industry experts working in the European Broadcasting Union sponsored Transport Protocol Experts Group, through being concurrently CEN TC 278 WG 4 and ISO TC 204 WG 10 – Project Group 7. The emerging TPEG specifications in both Binary and XML formats are fast becoming recognised as adaptable to many different wireless delivery bearers suitable for in-vehicle services. At present Road Traffic Messages, Public Transport Information and Service and Network Information applications, have been completed. The work is essentially at the ISO OSI protocol stack application layer, but has included great consideration for the lower layers. The suite of TPEG specifications – now undergoing standardisation - and their mapping will be described. A brief comparison with the earlier legacy system: RDS-TMC will be shown. TPEG technology offers language independent service delivery capable of offering multimodal information to the traveller, without any constraints of requiring a location database. TPEG technology offers a comprehensive machine readable capability to dynamically support invehicle navigation systems and to offer human readable messages to a wide range of client types. The use of structured tables in TPEG technology allows extensions to be specified as new concepts are required. Furthermore TPEG technology now provides a complete “toolkit” to help rapid development of new applications, such as Parking Information and Congestion and Travel Time.
