Summer International Internships 2016: SENEGAL
Application deadline is March 1 and later applicants will be admitted on a rolling basis. SIS cannot
guarantee placement with these organizations; the list is meant to be demonstrative. Program fee and
internship hosts are subject to change based on the needs and requirements of WARC.
The West African Research Association responded for summer 2016 internship positions
Program fee:
$1,155

Program includes:
Airport transfers, homestay accommodation for duration of 6-week
internship, orientation program, Dakar practical city tour, access to
WARC offices for support, library access, and internet, and internship
placement fee.
Preferred skills:
Proficiency in French
Content areas:
Refugee issues, education and training, microfinance, women’s issues,
sustainable development, natural resources, human rights, children, law,
civil society, culture
Positions:
The organizations below are examples of those available to take interns in
the summer. WARC will work with students and their partner
organizations to make appropriate placements by arranging internships
with local and regional NGOs and linking students with organizations,
taking care of the administrative details, and helping interns with logistics

Types of internships available in Senegal:
A. Public health and social services
Internship in a Health post (Poste de santé) in a village or in a city: shadow a nurse, a
midwife or community health agents who provide healthcare, implement public health
policies in a community level.
Internship in a maternity: shadow a gynecologist or a midwife who give prenatal and
postnatal consultations, delivery assistance and reproductive services.
Internship in a community health organization: work with community health agents to
promote health education and awareness within a community.
Internship in a traditional hospital: shadow and assist the traditional doctors in the
preparation and the administration of their medicine.
Internship in a orphanage or in a special school (for disabled children): help take care of
babies and children with special needs.
B. Environment and agriculture
Internship in an urban agriculture project: work with the team on developing techniques
and practices in urban agriculture
Internship in an organic agriculture NGO: work with the team to promote organic
agriculture methods among farmers.
Internship in a park: work with the park rangers to preserve and restore the biodiversity
C. Entrepreneurship and microfinance
Internship in a microfinance institution: assist in the daily operations (recording,
accounting, file filling, financial analysis, financial education, advising, etc)
Internship in a women’s organization: assist in the production and commercialization
processes, organizational development, etc.
D. Education (school is in session from October to mid June)
Internship in a school: assist a teacher, help in the administration, and assist in the
computer education.
Internship in women’s vocational training: assist in the training in English, computer
education, leadership, etc
Internship in an Education regional branch: assist in the education policies formulation,
implementation and evaluation in the regional level.

Internship in a Koranic or informal school: teach languages, reading and writing and
computer education.
E. Arts and culture
Internship in an art and religious NGO: work in the workshops and farms live in religious
community.
Internship in a music band: play music and or dance with the band, help in the marketing
and communication activities.
Internship in a handicraftsman: work with an artist to create artifacts.
F. Human rights
Internship in women’s rights organization: assist in legal and psychological counseling,
advocacy and communication for women’s rights.
Internship in political and civil rights organization: assist the analysis of political issues in
West Africa, assist in the advocacy education work.
G. Community development
Internship in a community development organization: assist in the community planning
and development work, fundraising, and project management.
NOTE: Once the internship interests are more specific it will be much easier to identify
the appropriate agencies.
