Peking University
International Student
Orientation Guide
From the President
Dear International Students,
On behalf of the entire Peking University community, I would
like to extend a warm welcome to all of you to the beautiful
campus!
Peking University (PKU) is a student-oriented research university where individual
responsibility and independence are fundamental to the education we offer. We strive to
create an environment where not only Chinese but also international students and staff
feel at home.
Since its establishment in 1898 as the first national comprehensive institution of higher
learning ever founded in China, PKU has been regarded as a symbol of modern Chinese
education. With our democratic administration laying great emphasis on academic
freedom and scientific research, we have proudly produced a great number of scholars in
various areas of concentration and specialty. The student body, faculty, and alumni have
made significant research achievements and generated an incredible number of works of
scholarship in both the arts and the sciences.
Internationalization is an important process in higher education. Spending time abroad
enriches the lives of our students and staff. At the same time, international students
and staff who visit PKU bring new insights to our academic community, creating a truly
international campus. While learning from brilliant minds and enhancing your intellectual
abilities, you may also indulge in its rich cultural heritages and participate in a variety of
extracurricular activities during your stay.
Finally, I would like to express my wish to keep in touch with you. We consider you to be
our best ambassadors and I hope that, after a fruitful and pleasant stay at PKU, you will
remain an integral part of our academic community.
Sincerely,
Wang Enge
President

Finances
There are several banks near Peking University where you
can set up a bank account after you have arrived in Beijing.
If you are planning to convert foreign currencies into RMB,
the banks in Beijing accept the foreign currencies of:
Pound Sterling, Hong Kong Dollar, American Dollar, Euro,
Japanese Yen, Canadian Dollar, Australian Dollar, etc.
Bank of China: http://www.boc.cn/
Many banks in Beijing accept American Dollar Traveler's
Checks; however, it takes more than 40 working days to
process the checks.
If you are planning to wire-transfer funds/money to your
Beijing bank account, do prepare some “on-hand” cash
to cover the expenses needed for short-term housing,
meals, etc. To be on a safe side, we recommend you to
carry the amount (of cash) that is enough to cover your
monthly living expenses as it takes several working days
for the money-transfer to be completed.
Our estimation for the average cost of living per month in
Beijing is 6,000 RMB (housing, food and transportation
included).

Packing for Your Trip
Travel light. Most daily necessities can be easily purchased in convenience stores, supermarkets and
shopping malls in Beijing. We recommend that you purchase your daily necessities (such as paper
folders, cooking utensils, mirrors, etc.) in Beijing after you have settled in, as you will then have a
better idea of what you actually need.
If possible, do consider packing with you a towel and a set of sheets from home. You might need
them to “settle-down” with on the day you arrived in Beijing.
We strongly suggest you bring along the things that will make you feel at home, such as posters,
photos and cultural items from your country. These momentos from home may help make you feel
comfortable in Beijing and also minimize cultural shocks as well as homesickness.
