Focus on your top 5 strengths. • Reflect on how you use each of these strengths. • Think about why these things bring you energy. Working with Social Media The State of Social Media 2014 • Facebook – 71% of individuals use this platform. • Twitter – 23% of individuals use this platform. • Instagram – 53% of young adults (18-29) use this platform. • LinkedIn – 50% of users with a college education use this platform. Engaging Your Network • 40% of recruiters say they disqualified job applicants based on information found online. (From Jeff Bullas 2015) • 88% found evidence of poor communication. • Recruiter Pet Peeves… • Spelling errors: 47% • Inappropriate pictures: 42% • Casual/text speak: 27% • Negative comments: 19% LinkedIn Why LinkedIn? 260 million professionals. • Individuals with completed LinkedIn profiles are 40 times more likely to get job offers than individuals with incomplete profiles. Job Search Advice • • • Add a profile picture, headline, & summary for more profile views. Education & experience sections allow for future connections. Privacy – Set to “job seeker” in the settings. LinkedIn Job Search Advice • • Can connect with employers, alumni, & see open jobs. Ask for recommendations and/or endorsements from colleagues. Be Mindful • Professional communication & accuracy of information listed. How do you use LinkedIn? Facebook Why Facebook? 1.4 billion users. • It is the largest social media platform, and it is the most widely-used form of social connection. More videos are uploaded here than on YouTube. Job Search Advice • • • Consider your “brand.” Who do you want to represent online? Privacy – Make sure strong privacy settings are in place. “Like” pages, join groups, and connect with colleagues.
