Symposium: The Impact of Drones on the Human Right to Peace, July 15 deadline
Under the guest editorship of our very own Dr. Jeffrey Bachman, Professorial Lecturer in Human Rights
and Co-Director of the Ethics, Peace, and Global Affairs MA program at American University’s School
of International Service, this issue explores the ways in which drones interfere with the right of affected

The Rise of ISIS: The Future of Syria, March 30
The Rise of ISIS: The Future of Syria, a panel discussion hosted by AU, will take place on March 30 in
the SIS Founders Room from 1:00-2:30pm. Panelists will include former Syrian diplomat Bassam
Barabandi, Kurdish affairs analyst Mutlu Civiroglu, and President of The Tharwa Foundation Ammar
Abdulhamid. The panel will be moderated by Dr. Abdel-Moneim of SIS.
Book Talk with May A. Rihani: Cultures without Borders, March 31
May A. Rihani, the former Co-Chair of the United Nations Girls’ Education Initiative, will be having a
book talk on Cultures without Borders on March 31st at 2:00pm. This is an open event hosted by the
Mohammed Said Farsi Chair of Islamic Peace. The event will be located in SIS Room 300.
Careers for Climate Change & Environmental Justice Alumni Panel, March 31
Passionate about environmental justice, climate change, and sustainability? Join the Career Center and
Office of Development and Alumni Relations for a panel and networking event with alumni who have

South Sudan Crisis: Human Rights and Role of International Community, April 8
Since December 2013, South Sudan has been embroiled in renewed violent conflict. More than 1 million
have been forcibly displaced and over 20,000 people have been killed. Most of the displaced are women
and children, living in dire conditions within refugee and protective camps. Mediation efforts by the
African Union’s Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) along with the US, EU, and UN
have failed to establish any sustainable peace. The conflict threatens the social fabric of South Sudanese
society as well as the stability of the entire East African region.
Join Creative Peace Initiatives in a discussion with South Sudanese and other experts on the root causes
of the conflict and approaches for its resolution. The event will be on April 8 from 6-7:30pm in the
Abramson Family Founders Room. Food will be served!

2015 Biennial Conference on the Business and Economics of Peace, April 10-11
This event will convene a range of students, academics, business practitioners, and policymakers to
develop new ideas and thinking on peace research and to establish networks to sustain conversation and

and the best papers from the conference will be selected and published in Greenleaf Publishing’s journal

Serbia and Kosovo: Studying the Post-Conflict Politics of History and Memory in the Balkans, May
23-31
This is a 3 credit course studying the Post-Conflict Politics of History and Memory in the Balkans. The
course will take place during the second half of May 2015. Students will spend 9 days in Kosovo and
Serbia in addition to preparatory and follow- up meetings in the US. Each day will be structured as 3
hours class time, with the rest of the day and evening spent in field experience and discussions/interviews
with scholars/practitioners. We will be studying as well as traveling in various parts of both Serbia and
Kosovo. This course is open to all Mason and non-Mason bachelors, masters, and Ph.D. students as a 3credit course, and to non-students as a professional development seminar.
