Celebrating 42 Years of Service
FALL, 2011
Message from the Chair
Dr. Richard Marder
Interim Chair
In assuming the responsibility
of interim chair of the department,
I want to emphasize our ongoing
commitment to excellence
in patient care, teaching, and
research and take a moment
to acknowledge all of the
physicians, scientists, nurses, and
administrative staff who have
devoted their time and energies
on behalf of our collective mission.
Their efforts are manifest in the
appreciation of our patients and
the national and international
reputation of our department.
On a personal note, it seems
like just yesterday that Dr. Michael
Chapman invited me to join
the faculty to develop a sports
medicine program. Our then small
group of faculty was fortunate
to have a mentor and leader as
inspirational and dedicated as
he. I hope that by service to the
department in my current role
I can repay a debt of gratitude
to Drs. Chapman, Benson, and
Rab for their interest in my
development when I was a new
faculty member.
I look forward to working
together with everyone in our
department to ensure that the
quality of our efforts continues
to be outstanding, collegiality
remains high, and that job
satisfaction is an attainable goal
for all. This will enable us to
succeed in continuing to deliver
the best in patient care, teaching,
research, and public service.
Richard A. Marder, M.D.
Professor and Interim
Department Chair

Congratulations Eric Klineberg, M.D.!
Dr. Klineberg (Spine Service) has been selected as one
of four Fellows to speak during the 2012
AOA-Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA)
Exchange Traveling Fellowship.
The AOA-Japanese Orthopaedic Association
Exchange Traveling Fellowship grew out of
the Kashiwagi-Suzuki Traveling Fellowship,
founded in part by Professor Emeritus Daiji
Kashiwagi of Kobe University in Kobe, Japan.
The tour will include attendance at the 85th
Annual Congress of the Japanese Orthopaedic Association, held May 17-20, 2012,
in Kyoto, Japan. It will also include visits to
several top Japanese medical centers and
historical landmarks.
In 1992 Robert Szabo, M.D. (Hand Service) was also the
recipient of this prestigious honor. Dr. Szabo had the following
to say about his experience in the program:
“I was one of three Fellows who were the first inaugural
group of Americans to visit Japan. The tour builds lasting
relationships with our colleagues in Japan. Since then I
have gone back many times to visit and lecture and I have
developed strong friendships. I served on the AOA (American
Orthopaedics Association) as Chair of the committee for
several years selecting future fellows. While I no longer am
on that committee, I still strongly support the concept of
international travel and education.”

an overwhelming response from the
