RESEARCH INTERESTS
Decision-making (behavioral economics and neuroeconomics) and behaviour change.
How does the mind/brain integrate information to evaluate experiences, values, or risks? How does it strike a balance between stability and context sensitivity in judgment and decision making? What neural mechanisms underlie this fundamental cognitive ability? This is the focus of my research, which is to advance understanding of human decision making. It is a convergence of psychology, neuroscience and economics, which achieves results that none of the disciplines can achieve by themselves. My research projects illustrate this approach, and also show how the synergy of methods such as experimentation, brain imaging, and quantitative modeling can achieve results that neither method can achieve alone.
In behavior change, I co-authored the Mindspace report published by the UK Cabinet Office, advising local and national policymakers on how to effectively use behavioural insights in their policy setting.
Since then I have been working on developing an integrated theory of behavior change which combines principles from psychology and behavioural economics. I also investigate innovative methods for developing and evaluating behaviour change interventions in health (professional practice such as safety and quality of care; patient behaviours such as medication adherence; and lifestyle risk factors such as diet and physical activity) and finance (motivating customers to manage their money more effectively; financial product design).

Teaching Statement . During my teaching experience, I have been responsible for preparing and giving lectures, assigning and grading essays, and supervising undergraduate and graduate research projects. I also have experience leading seminars, in which I introduce the students to a more rigorous style of thinking by constantly reviewing basic elements of methodology and statistics and by assigning extended research projects. I like to leave plenty of opportunities for students to ask questions and handle them with the necessary care, always maintaining a positive attitude. My students are comfortable and are not afraid of asking even the most basic questions. I also tend to make interdisciplinary connections while lecturing and in individual meetings. Finally, for me teaching is an extremely dynamic process in which the lecturer is constantly learning; and I welcome the opportunity to gain new teaching skills, in particular by incorporating currently available technology in my classes.

SOCIAL IMPACT
I co-authored a new conceptual framework for behaviour change in public policy: MINDSPACE, which is based on insights from behavioural economics. The report was well received by academics and policy makers, and was launched with a major conference in Whitehall (on 2 March 2010,
Westminster Central Hall) with the participation of many senior civil servants. The report also attracted significant attention in the media as it was the basis for establishing the ‘Behaviour Insight
Team’ at the Cabinet Office (UK) to think about ways of supplementing the more traditional tools of government, with policy that helps to encourage behaviour change. Its aim is to help the UK
Government develop and apply lessons from behavioural economics and behavioural science to public policy making. It supports Government departments in designing policy that better reflects how people really behave, not how they are assumed to behave; and in doing so, it supports the
12
Government’s commitment to reducing regulatory burdens on business and society, and achieving its goals as cheaply and effectively as possible. Many other government departments and other (public and private) organisations in UK and abroad also use MINDSPACE as their guiding framework; and we are working closely with them in the development of interventions and policies. MINDSPACE has also stimulated discussion in various publications in the media and professional and academic outlets.
