Overview of Program A UC DAVIS HEALTH Pain Management Tele-Mentoring SYSTEM PROGRAM Supporting primary care clinicians deliver effective and safe pain care Chronic Pain Management in Primary Care The UC Davis Pain Management TeleMentoring program is a peer-to-peer video conference mentoring program designed to support community primary care clinicians in their mission to provide high quality, safe, effective, evidence based pain care. Through weekly videoconference learning and support sessions, the program provides primary care providers with the opportunity to increase their specialized knowledge in pain management. The Division of Pain Medicine, in partnership with the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing and the Center for Health and Technology at UC Davis, facilitates 60-minute weekly educational sessions. Each session includes a 25-minute didactic presentation on a key pain-related topic (e.g., responsible opioid prescribing, neuropathic pain, back pain, pain and mental health), and 30 minutes dedicated to interactive case discussions. The cases are designed by the UC Davis team and linked to the session topic for that week. Participating clinics are also invited to submit de-identified case examples that highlight key issues of concern within their respective clinical practices. Nearly 97% of previous participants reported an increase in competence as a result of participating in the video conferences. “I feel more equipped to handle pain patients; having additional tools learned through the program decreases my anxiety about caring for pain patients.” Feedback from a participating clinician No direct patient care or direct patient consultation is provided and all cases discussions focus on clinical challenges to stimulate discussions. Open to All Staff All clinical staff members are encouraged to participate in the videoconference sessions. Continuing education credits are provided through UC Davis at no additional cost to participants. “TOGETHER WE CAN APPLY EVIDENCE-BASED, PERSONCENTERED STRATEGIES TO EFFECTIVELY MANAGE PAIN ACROSS ALL PRIMARY CARE Expert Guidance SETTINGS.” Leaders from Pain Medicine, — DAVID COPENHAVER, MD, MPH Psychiatry, Rheumatology, Director of Chronic Pain Physical Therapy, Pharmacy, and Tele-Mentoring many other departments take part Assistant Professor Division of Pain Medicine in the sessions each week. at UC Davis Program Fees UC Davis has established agreements with several health plans to cover the cost of participation for clinics within their networks.
