The celebration of Minority Health Month in April calls attention to the many ethnically and culturally diverse communities that make up the great State of New Jersey. The Garden State is proud to be home to a number of the fastest-growing groups in the country. I am proud that our Department of Health uses scientifically proven evidence-based programs to prevent sickness and ensure the health of our residents. The month of April will showcase many events and activities that focus on prevention strategies and screenings to promote the wellness of our residents. As Governor, I am committed to supporting initiatives and programs that improve opportunities for good health, especially those that can be substantiated with good health outcomes. I am pleased to recognize Minority and Multicultural Health Month 2013 and hope that this year’s theme, “ Health Equity for All… Prevention Works!” will inspire residents to support our efforts to eliminate health disparities. I encourage all residents to attend the many events that will take place throughout the state this month. Chris Christie, Governor Kim Guadagno, Lt. Governor april 1-6, 2013 Mon. Freehold April is National Minority Health Month and this year’s theme is “Health Equity for All...Prevention Works!” Community organizations around the state have planned nearly 150 health screenings, exercise programs, diabetes/cooking classes, forums and health fairs focused on prevention strategies to reduce health disparities. The Department’s 2013 Minority Health Celebration will also include three Health Equity Forums, jointly sponsored by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association. The objective is to encourage community alignment with the National Prevention and Health Promotion Strategies to reduce health disparities and with the Healthy New Jersey 2020 goals and objectives. This year the OMMH has awarded a total of $194,000 in grant funding to 9 community and faithbased organizations to implement scientifically proven evidence based prevention programs. An additional $800,000 will be awarded under the OMMH Health Disparity Prevention Program mini grants. As we salute Minority Health Month 2013, the Department reaffirms its commitment to create an inclusive health system that treats all people equitably - and one where all New Jerseyans can achieve optimal health and a higher quality of life through promoting health and preventing disease. I encourage you to attend events and activities listed in he calendar. I’m sure they will inform and inspire us as we work together to reach our collective goal - Health Equity for All! Mary E.
