Renzo Cavalieri joined the Department of Mathematics at CSU in 2008. He received his PhD at
the University of Utah under the supervision of Professor Aaron Bertam. Prior to his arrival at
CSU, he was an assistant professor at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Dr. Cavalieri’s
research is related to various aspects of intersection theory of moduli spaces, a field of research
straddling algebraic geometry and mathematical physics. In addition to his research, Renzo
believes that one of the perks of being a mathematician is being able to share mathematics
with others, at all levels. His desire to share mathematics has given him the opportunity to
travel the world to present minicourses and speak about his research to a number of
undergraduate and graduate students. He has also initiated a cooperation program with the
mathematics department of the University of Costa Rica. Currently, Dr. Cavalieri is a PI for a
grant supporting WAGS, a bi-yearly conference in Algebraic Geometry gathering most of the
community in the western United States. Annually, Renzo hosts a lively seminar group
(FRAGMENT) at CSU, which has had many interesting speakers visit our department, campus,
and community. He is grateful to the Simons Foundation and to the NSF for supporting his
mathematical activities. Dr. Cavalieri has also mentored two senior graduate students, Dusty
Ross and Eric Miles. He has enjoyed watching these students mature into fine mathematicians
and looks forward to his junior graduate students, Douglas Ortego and David Allen, to journey
down the same path.
