Choose one of the following tasks. Whichever option you choose, your writing must:





Use appropriate techniques consistently
Express all essential information and supporting detail accurately and
coherently
Use an appropriate structure which delineates points
Use accurate spelling, punctuation and syntax, and vary your vocabulary
appropriately.
You should write a minimum of 600 words in total.
Essay


Write an essay in which you discuss the case for and against banning smoking
in all public places.
Write a short essay in which you argue either for or against foxhunting.
Report


Write a short report in which you investigate the quality of facilities (e.g.
canteen, common rooms, recreational facilities, etc.) in your school/college.
Write a short report that investigates the case for and against euthanasia.
Portfolio of thematically linked pieces
 Write (a) a letter to the local paper in which you express your point of view on a
local issue; (b) a memo to the chairperson on the Action Committee associated
with this local issue, in which you discuss your progress in organising a protest
day; and (c) write some text for inclusion on a leaflet which you will hand out on
the protest day. (NB: Each piece has a different target audience, and your
writing must be appropriate in each case.)
 Write a portfolio of related pieces that investigate a health issue or a sports
issue.
After you’ve completed this TA, give it to your tutor. After marking it, s/he will be able
to decide if you are ready for the summation assessment.
