Transcript of interview with the teacher about the benefits of asking Mr Cameron from the council to explain to the children how street lights work. Interviewer What do you think the benefits were of involving an expert, someone from the community? Teacher Firstly it gave the children a purpose for writing, in terms of our literacy work. They actually had an audience, they all had something to say and it meant when we wrote our letters they had the excitement of waiting for this reply. They were over the moon when Mr Cameron from the council actually came out to us. Also I couldn’t have given the information he had. I wouldn’t have been able to access a street light, which he was able to bring in and I think it captured the children’s imaginations and they were so motivated. The amount of questions that came from the children and from children that I wouldn’t have expected at that time was amazing. Once they saw the street lamp and heard someone talking that wasn’t the voice of the person they hear from first thing in the morning to the last thing in the school day meant they were so focused and meant that the more that they found out the more they wanted to learn.
