The data available in each of the four reports are summarized in Table 1. OBSERVATIONS All data in this report were collected at stations occupied by Research Vessel ACONA (Burt and Pattullo, 1961). The ACONA was designed with special features that have made it possible to obtain data under more adverse sea and weather conditions than was previously possible with an 80-foot vessel. Winches and rigging for ease in handling equipment over the sides were included; a bow thruster makes it possible to maintain a steady heading while stations are being occupied. With wind velocities up to 35 knots, low wire angles were maintained, and the ship was held on station with a minimum amount of rolling. This increased stability made it possible to extend the existing survey tracks to 165 miles offshore. A line of stations offshore from Brookings, Oregon, was added (Figure 1). The sampling operation at each station generally consisted of one hydrographic cast to 800 or 1000 meters, a bathythermograph cast to 200 meters, a Clarke-Bumpus plankton tow to 150 meters, and the release of 12 drift bottles (Burt and Wyatt, 1964). Midwater trawl collections were taken on all except the June cruise. INSTRUMENTS AND RELIABILITY All reversing thermometers were calibrated at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Temperature readings were estimated to be accurate to + 0.02°C. Oxygen was determined by the Winkler method (estimated accuracy + 0.05 ml/liter). Salinity determinations were made by the Mohr method, (estimated accuracy + 0.03%a). The spectrophoto metric method was used to determine phosphate (estimated accuracy + 0.15 lig atoms/liter). Calibrations of the meter wheel showed no observable change during the period. Depth estimates were checked only for the reproducibility of thermometric depths at the 750-meter level. This check was made by placing all unprotected thermometers at a depth of 750 meters and recording the differences between the thermometers to be routinely used and two standard unprotected thermometers especially calibrated at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Differences -up to ± 12 meters at 750 meters were recorded. Depth estimates of the data presented in this report are believed to have about this same accuracy. Pre-trip and post-trip of bottles were detected on a few occasions, particularly during high winds. Observations from such bottles are not included in this report. 2 Table I. Equations for these computations were taken from H.O. 614 (1955). The computer was also used to interpolate for all properties at standard depths. The interpolation method outlined by Rattray (1962) is used. The interpolated value is found by taking the average of the two values obtained from three-point parabolic (Lagrange) interpolations. One parabola is determined by two observed points above and one below the standard depth under consideration; the other by one point above and two below the standard depth. One modification to this method has been made. A parabolic interpolation is likely to be unsatisfactory if both the standard depth and the vertex of the parabola fall between the same two observed points. When this condition occurs,a linear interpolation is used. The interpolations found by this method and by the graphic method used at Scripps (Klein, unpublished manuscript) were compared. Nineteen 1000-meter stations were chosen from all seasons of the year. Interpolations of temperature and oxygen by the two methods were found to agree within + 0.02 units at the 95% confidence level. Interpolations for salinity and phosphate agreed within ± 0.01 units. The observed and processed hydrographic data collected during the period June through December 1961 are listed in Table II.
