The goal of the partnership is to leverage the complementary missions of deployment and commercialization (DOE) and fundamental research and education (NSF) to address issues of national importance that impact the efficiency of the internal combustion engine (ICE). The Directorate for Engineering seeks proposals with transformative ideas that meet the detailed requirements delineated in this solicitation. The foundation’s Special Grant Program in the Chemical Sciences provides funding for innovative projects in any area consistent with the Dreyfus Foundation’s broad objective to advance the chemical sciences. Examples of areas of interest include but are not limited to the increase in public awareness, understanding, and appreciation of the chemical sciences; innovative approaches to chemistry education at all levels (K-12, undergraduate, and graduate); and efforts to make chemistry careers more attractive. Research proposals are not customarily considered. (PND 5/11/12) URL: http://www.dreyfus.org/awards/ special_grant_program_chemical.shtml Deadline: 6/4/2012 19-5 Plug and Play Photovoltaics (DOE) Through the Plug and Play Photovoltaics Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA), the Department of Energy will invest up to $25 million over five years to advance the development of a commercial plug-and-play photovoltaic system, which is envisioned as an off-the-shelf product that is fully inclusive with little need for individual customization. Homeowners can install the system without special training or tools. The homeowner simply plugs the system into a PV-ready circuit and an automatic PV discovery process initiates communication between the system and the utility. The plug-and-play concept has been implemented very successfully in the computer and automotive industries. The Department of Energy believes that these same innovations can be applied to the PV industry to reduce costs and simplify installations. This funding opportunity seeks to fundamentally change the design and installation of residential PV systems and help automate utility interconnection and permitting processes. The goal of the Research Experiences for Teachers (RET) activity is to enhance the professional development of K-12 science educators through research experience at the emerging frontiers of science in order to bring new knowledge into the classroom. BIO strongly encourages all its grantees to make special efforts to identify talented teachers who can participate in this RET activity to integrate research and education. Applications must link an environmental exposure to the increased incidence of weight gain, glucose tolerance/insulin sensitivity and aspects of metabolic syndrome in animal models or human studies. While any exposure window is acceptable it is anticipated that the most sensitive time for exposures to affect the disease outcomes will be during development e.g. in utero and/or neonatal or early childhood. For human studies developmental exposures (in utero and early childhood) should be linked to early biomarkers of disease onset. Animal studies should focus on identifying environmental chemicals that alter endpoints indicative of affecting disease development and the site and mechanism(s) of the effects that lead to the increased disease incidence.
