Limited Submissions
Limited submission programs have
sponsor restrictions on the number of
proposals that may be submitted by a
single institution and will require institutional screening to determine which
applications will be submitted. Dr. Jim
Guikema, Associate Vice President for
Research, is the internal coordinator for
limited submission programs. Please
notify him at 785-532-6195, email:
guikema@ksu.edu, by the Internal due
date listed in the Funding Bulletin (FB
30-3) or by at least two months prior to
the sponsor deadline if you wish to submit to a limited submission program.

GENERAL
30-1 Grants for Conservation
Easements in Flint Hills of Kansas
(NECP)
The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, in cooperation with corporate and
government partners, is offering grants for
the permanent protection of tallgrass prairie in the Flint Hills of Kansas through the
Native Environment Conservation Plan.
Funding will facilitate perpetual conservation easements for up to ten thousand acres
in the Flint Hills. The objective is to support the protection and enhancement of
tallgrass prairies while promoting vegetative resilience and restoring habitats to
benefit the greater prairie chicken, grassland birds, migrating and nesting birds,
and other grassland dependent wildlife.
The initiative will work with landowners
to ensure that wildlife and environmental
benefits are guaranteed through permanent
easements held by the Kansas Land Trust.
All lands to be protected must be within
the Flint Hills Legacy Conservation Area
or the Heart of the Flint Hills. Priority for
funding will be directed to proposals to
protect the highest quality tallgrass prairie
in the Flint Hills. Eligible applicants
include individual landowners, nonprofit
501c organizations, educational institu-

30-2 Instrument Development for
Biomedical Applications (R21) (NIH)
The National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS), encourages innovative applications for the development
of new or improved instrumentation for
biomedical research. Projects should propose tools that can be used by a wide
range of biomedical or clinical researchers, and not limited to a specific organ or
disease. RFA-GM-130010 (NIHG 7/27/

30-3 Institutional Research and
Academic Career Development
Awards (IRACDA) (NIH)
The purpose of the Institutional Research
and Academic Career Development
Award (IRACDA) Program is to develop
a diverse group of highly trained biomedical and behavioral scientists to
address the Nation’s biomedical and
behavioral research needs. The program
promotes consortia between researchintensive institutions (RII) and partner
institutions that have a historical mission
and a demonstrated commitment to the
training, encouragement and assistance
to students from groups underrepresented
in the biomedical and behavioral
research enterprise of the nation. The
IRACDA program provides support for a
traditional mentored postdoctoral
research experience at an RII combined
with an opportunity to develop the academic skills, including teaching, through
workshops and through mentored teaching assignments of postdoctoral fellows
at a partner institution. Only one application per institution is allowed. PAR-12245 (NIHG 7/27/12)

AGRICULTURE
30-4 Pork Checkoff (NPB)
The Pork Checkoff Animal Welfare
Committee is requesting proposals on
issues impacting the welfare of swine.
All submitted projects should be multidisciplinary in their approach and should
include neuroscience, performance, physiology, and behavior when applicable.
Experimental designs must have all the
appropriate controls to be considered for
funding. Proposed methodologies need to
be described in detail and behavioral
methods and physiological assays used in
the study need to be validated. Proposals
need to also include power calculations to
validate the proposed sample size.
Projects that have cooperative arrangements with industry are strongly encouraged and will be prioritized. Housing of
gestating sows has been and continues to
be an important question for the swine
industry. Proposals for individual and
group housing systems will be accepted
with less emphasis on comparing group
housing to stall housing.

30-6 Advanced Computing Initiative
(ACI) (DoD)
The ACI is a DoD-sponsored computer
science research program initiated by the
NSA and the ARL-ARO. It focuses on
areas of strategic importance to U.S.
national security policy. IT seeks to
increase the Department’s intellectual
capital in the computer sciences and
improve its ability to address future challenges and build bridges between the
Department and the computer science
community. ACI brings together universities, research institutions, companies, and
individual scholars and supports multidisciplinary and cross-institutional projects
addressing specific topic areas deter-

30-7 Nuclear Education Curricula
Development Grant (NRC)
The Energy Policy Act of 2005 authorized the NRC Nuclear Education Grant
Program to support courses, studies, training, curricula, and disciplines pertaining
to nuclear safety, nuclear security, nuclear
environmental protection, and other fields
that the Commission determines to be
critical to the NRC’s regulatory mission.
The NRC Nuclear Education Grant Program’s primary purpose is supporting and
developing the educational infrastructure
necessary to allow the Nation to safely
advance its nuclear energy initiatives. The
NRC currently encourages curriculum
development in the following technical
areas: Nuclear Engineering; Radiochemistry and Radiobiology; Health Physics;
Materials and Mechanical Engineering;
Reliability and Risk Analysis; Electrical
Engineering; Safeguards and Security;
Human Factors and Human Reliability;
Fire Protection Engineering; Nuclear
Waste; and Computational Methods. HRFN-0712-EDU7 (GG 7/26/12)

30-8 Scholarship and Fellowship
Education Grant (NRC)
This program provides funding to support
nuclear science, engineering, and related
disciplines to develop a workforce capable of supporting the design, construction,
operation, and regulation of nuclear facilities and the safe handling of nuclear
materials. This announcement is for
scholarships and fellowships. As a condition for scholarships or fellowships,
recipients must demonstrate satisfactory
academic progress in their fields of study,
as determined by criteria contained in this
announcement and as established by the
NRC. Consequently, NRC requires scholarship and fellowship recipients to serve
six (6) months in nuclear-related employment for each full or partial year of academic support. The employment may be
with NRC, other Federal agencies, State
agencies, Department of Energy laboratories, nuclear-related industry, or academia
in the recipients’ sponsored fields of
study. NRC may waive, in whole or in
part, the service obligation, upon determination that compliance by the individual
is impractical. HR-FN-0712-NED01 (GG
