To be added to the electronic mailing list, send an email message to: listserv@listserv.ksu.edu Leave the subject line blank. In the message area, type: sub fundingbulletin. Limited Submissions Limited submission programs have sponsor restrictions on the number of proposals that may be submitted by a single institution and will require institutional screening to determine which applications will be submitted. Dr. Jim Guikema, Associate Vice President for Research, is the internal coordinator for limited submission programs. Please notify him at 785-532-6195, email: guikema@ksu.edu, by the Internal due date listed in the Funding Bulletin or by at least two months prior to the sponsor deadline if you wish to submit to a limited submission program. Currently posted Internal Deadlines: http://www.kstate.edu/research/funding/bulletins/ bul12/limits12/index.htm GENERAL 35-1 Meaning of Evolutionary Convergence Grant (Templeton) The John Templeton Foundation has announced the launch of a $5 million initiative to support research on the significance of biological convergence for a better understanding of the living world. Eligible proposals might include philosophical investigation of some aspect of convergence, of the phenomenon itself in light of current models of biological process, or investigation of the history of its study with an eye towards clarification of the concept of convergence, its use, and meanings, Alternatively, applicants may wish to propose empirical, synthetic, or simulation studies, or pilots for larger scale empirical projects. Applicants may propose projects involving convergent evolution at any level (chemical, organ, etc.). However, the foundation encourages use of biological contexts generally accepted as true examples of convergences, or which applicants are confident they can prove to be so, since research on its meanings is likely to be sufficiently contentious without this added concern. Innovative robotics research and applications emphasizing the realization of such co-robots acting in direct support of and in a symbiotic relationship with human partners is supported by multiple agencies of the federal government including the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). This program will address the entire life cycle from fundamental research and development to manufacturing and deployment. Methods for the establishment and infusion of robotics in educational curricula and research to gain a better understanding of the long term social, behavioral and economic implications of co-robots across all areas of human activity are important parts of this initiative. Collaboration between academic, industry, non-profit and other organizations is strongly encouraged to establish better linkages between fundamental science and technology development, deployment and use. To preserve and ensure continued access to such collections, institutions must implement preventive conservation measures, which encompass managing relative humidity, temperature, light, and pollutants in collection spaces; providing protective storage enclosures and systems for collections; and safeguarding collections from theft and from natural and manmade disasters. 20121204-PF (GG 8/27/ 12) URL: http://www.neh.gov/grants/ preservation/sustaining-culturalheritage-collections Deadline: 12/4/2012 35-5 Creative Placemaking Projects (ArtPlace) ArtPlace, a nationwide initiative to drive community revitalization through the arts, is inviting Letters of Inquiry for its third round of funding. A collaboration of eleven major national and regional foundations, six of the nation’s largest banks, and eight federal agencies, ArtPlace works to accelerate creative place making in the United States. To that end, it defines creative place making as a means of investing in art and culture at the heart of a portfolio of integrated strategies that can drive vibrancy and diversity so powerful that it transforms communities. Grants will be awarded to projects that involve arts organizations, artists, and designers working in partnership with local and national partners to make transformative impact on community vibrancy. The rush to adopt cyberspace, however, has exposed its fragility and vulnerabilities. This challenge requires a dedicated approach to research, development, and education that leverages the disciplines of mathematics and statistics, the social sciences, and engineering with the computational and information sciences. This program welcomes proposals that address Cybersecurity from a Trustworthy Computing Systems perspective (TWC); a Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences perspective (SBE); and a Transition to Practice perspective (TPP). In addition, they welcome proposals that integrate research addressing two or more of these perspectives as well as proposals focusing A weekly publication of the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs. Investigators are encouraged to submit for proof of concept studies in cell culture, rodents, and/or target species. The $25 million Michelson Prize will be offered to the first entity to provide Found Animals Foundation with a single dose, safe and effective non-surgical sterilant for male and female cats and dogs. Found Animals Foundation encourages scientists from all fields to compete for the Michelson Prize & Grants, including but limited to researchers in disciplines such as Biology, Biotechnology, Cell Biology, Chemistry, Endocrinology, Gene Silencing, Immunology, Materials Science, Nanotechnology, Neuroscience, Pharmacology, and Reproductive Biology. URL: http://www.foundanimals.org/ Deadline: Open WEBINAR: There will be a free webinar about the Michelson Prize & Grants in Reproductive Biology on Thursday, September 27th. Dr. Shirley Johnston, Director of Scientific Research, and Ms. Katy Palfrey, the Michelson Prize & Grants Program Manager, will give attendees an introduction to the program, discuss what kinds of research the MPG program funds, and explain how to apply for funding. Applicants may propose to use wild-type or humanized gnotobiotic model organisms or existing human cohorts to investigate how exposure to environmental chemicals affects the microbiome in both the short and the long term. Early life exposures are of particular interest, as these occur during the initial colonization of the microbiota and may permanently affect its potential. Exploratory studies will be supported under a companion FOA, RFA-ES-12-007. RFA-ES-12006 (NIHG 8/24/12) URL: http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/ rfa-files/RFA-ES-12-006.html Deadline: Letters of Intent 11/19/2012; Applications 12/18/2012 35-11 Lymphatics in Health and Disease in the Digestive, Urinary, Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Systems (R01) (NIH) This FOA is to encourage Research Project Grant (R01) applications for research into aspects of lymphatic vessel physiology and pathophysiology related to health and disease of digestive system and urinary tract organs, and cardiovascular and pulmonary systems; in resolution of thromboembolic events; and inflammation and immune responses as they relate to these diseases. However, studies with the major focus on immune mechanisms will not be considered responsive. Studies to understand the factors that control local lymphatic vessel functional anatomy and physiology during health or disease in these organs/systems, and the mechanisms by which alterations of lymphatic vessel function affect organ function, are of interest. This solicitation promotes joint activities between the NSF Division of Materials Research (DMR) and funding organizations in Africa, Asia, the Americas and Europe. Proposals submitted to NSF in response to this solicitation must have clear relevance to fundamental materials and condensed matter research supported by the NSF Division of Materials Research (DMR). Proposals will be evaluated within the context of programmatic areas supported by DMR: condensed matter physics, solid state and materials chemistry, polymers, biomaterials, metallic materials and nanostructures, ceramics, electronic and photonic materials, and condensed matter and materials theory. In addition, this year the Materials World Network (MWN) program will particularly focus on proposals related to Sustainable Materials, DMR’s effort in Sustainable Chemistry, Engineering and Materials (SusChEM). This initiative is described by NSF 12-095 and is aimed at enabling the basic science and engineering discoveries that will reduce dependence on non-renewable resources and improve efficiency of industrial processes. Research projects that target the discovery of new materials or make materials more sustainable through improved synthesis, enhanced applications, and/or advances in lifecycle management are particularly encouraged for the Materials World Network program.
