GENERAL
35-1 Meaning of Evolutionary
Convergence Grant (Templeton)
The John Templeton Foundation has
announced the launch of a $5 million initiative to support research on the significance of biological convergence for a
better understanding of the living world.
Eligible proposals might include philosophical investigation of some aspect of
convergence, of the phenomenon itself in
light of current models of biological process, or investigation of the history of its
study with an eye towards clarification of
the concept of convergence, its use, and
meanings, Alternatively, applicants may
wish to propose empirical, synthetic, or
simulation studies, or pilots for larger scale
empirical projects. Applicants may propose projects involving convergent evolution at any level (chemical, organ, etc.).
However, the foundation encourages use
of biological contexts generally accepted
as true examples of convergences, or
which applicants are confident they can
prove to be so, since research on its meanings is likely to be sufficiently contentious
without this added concern. (PND 8/24/12)

35-2 National Robotics Initiative
(NRI) (NSF)
The goal of the National Robotics Initiative is to accelerate the development and
use of robots in the United States that
work beside, or cooperatively with, people. Innovative robotics research and
applications emphasizing the realization
of such co-robots acting in direct support
of and in a symbiotic relationship with
human partners is supported by multiple
agencies of the federal government
including the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Aeronautics and
Space Administration (NASA), the
National Institutes of Health (NIH), and
the U.S. Department of Agriculture
(USDA). This program will address the
entire life cycle from fundamental
research and development to manufacturing and deployment. Methods for the
establishment and infusion of robotics in
educational curricula and research to
gain a better understanding of the long
term social, behavioral and economic
implications of co-robots across all areas
of human activity are important parts of
this initiative. Collaboration between
academic, industry, non-profit and other
organizations is strongly encouraged to
establish better linkages between fundamental science and technology development, deployment and use. NSF 12-607

35-4 Sustaining Cultural Heritage
Collections (NEH)
Sustaining Cultural Heritage Collections
(SCHC) helps cultural institutions meet
the complex challenge of preserving
large and diverse holdings of humanities
materials for future generations by supporting preventive conservation mea-
sures that mitigate deterioration and
prolong the useful life of collections. To
preserve and ensure continued access to
such collections, institutions must implement preventive conservation measures,
which encompass managing relative
humidity, temperature, light, and pollutants in collection spaces; providing protective storage enclosures and systems for
collections; and safeguarding collections
from theft and from natural and manmade disasters. 20121204-PF (GG 8/27/

35-6 Secure and Trustworthy
Cyberspace (SaTC) (NSF)
Cyberspace has transformed the daily
lives of people for the better. The rush to
adopt cyberspace, however, has exposed
its fragility and vulnerabilities. This challenge requires a dedicated approach to

engineering with the computational and
information sciences. This program welcomes proposals that address Cybersecurity from a Trustworthy Computing
Systems perspective (TWC); a Social,
Behavioral and Economic Sciences perspective (SBE); and a Transition to Practice perspective (TPP). In addition, they
welcome proposals that integrate research
addressing two or more of these perspectives as well as proposals focusing
