Limited Submissions
Limited submission programs have
sponsor restrictions on the number of
proposals that may be submitted by a
single institution and will require institutional screening to determine which
applications will be submitted. Dr. Jim
Guikema, Associate Vice President for
Research, is the internal coordinator for
limited submission programs. Please
notify him at 785-532-6195, email:
guikema@ksu.edu, by the Internal due
date listed in the Funding Bulletin (FB
9-3) or by at least two months prior to
the sponsor deadline if you wish to submit to a limited submission program.

GENERAL
9-1 Faculty Early Career
Development (CAREER) Program
(NSF)
The Faculty Early Career Development
(CAREER) Program is a Foundation-wide
activity that offers the National Science
Foundation’s most prestigious awards in
support of junior faculty who exemplify
the role of teacher-scholars through outstanding research, excellent education and
the integration of education and research
within the context of the mission of their
organizations. Each year NSF selects nominees for the Presidential Early Career
Awards for Scientists and Engineers
(PECASE) from among the most meritorious recent CAREER awardees. Selection
for this award is based on two important
criteria: 1) innovative research at the frontiers of science and technology that is relevant to the mission of the sponsoring
organization or agency, and 2) community
service demonstrated through scientific
leadership, education or community outreach. NSF 11-690

Vol. 20, No. 9
9-2 Research Coordination
Networks (RCN) (NSF)
The goal of the RCN program is to
advance a field or create new direction in
research or education. Groups of investigators will be supported to communicate
and coordinate their research, training
and educational activities across disciplinary, organizational, geographic and
international boundaries. RCN provides
opportunities to foster new collaborations, including international partnerships, and address interdisciplinary
topics. Innovative ideas for implementing novel networking strategies, collaborative technologies, and development of
community standards for data and metadata are especially encouraged. Proposed
networking activities directed to the
RCN program should focus on a theme
to give coherence to the collaboration,
such as a broad research question or particular technologies or approaches. NSF

9-3 Integrative Graduate Education
and Research Traineeship Program
(IGERT) (NSF)
The Integrative Graduate Education and
Research Traineeship (IGERT) program
has been developed to meet the challenges of educating U.S. Ph.D. scientists
and engineers with interdisciplinary
backgrounds, deep knowledge in chosen
disciplines, and technical, professional,
and personal skills. The program is
intended to establish new models for
graduate education and training in a fertile environment for collaborative
research that transcends traditional disciplinary boundaries. It is also intended to
facilitate diversity in student participation and preparation, and to contribute to
a world-class, broadly inclusive, and globally engaged science and engineering
workforce. Building upon the IGERT
platform, the purpose of this IGERT
solicitation is to support new models in
graduate education in which students are
engaged in an environment that supports
innovation to learn through hands-on
experience how their own research may
contribute in new ways to benefit society
and to learn the processes for the successful implementation of such contributions. NSF 11-533

9-4 Environmental Education
Regional Grants (EPA)
EPA is seeking grant proposals from eligible applicants to support environmen-
tal education projects that promote
environmental stewardship and help
develop knowledgeable and responsible
students, teachers, and citizens. This grant
program provides financial support for
projects that design, demonstrate, and/or
disseminate environmental education
practices, methods, or techniques as
described in this notice. Under this solicitation EPA expects to award environmental education grants from the 10 EPA
Regional offices. EPA-EE-11-02 (GG 3/3/

EDUCATION
9-5 Steppingstones of Technology
Innovation for Children With
Disabilities (ED)
The purposes of the Technology and
Media Services for Individuals with Disabilities program are to: 1) Improve
results for children with disabilities by
promoting the development, demonstration, and use of technology; 2) support
educational media services activities
designed to be of educational value in the
classroom setting to children with disabilities; and 3) provide support for captioning and video description that are

9-6 Education Research and Special
Education Research Grant Programs
(ED)
The central purpose of the Institute of
Education Sciences’ research grant programs is to provide parents, educators,
students, researchers, policymakers, and
the general public with reliable and valid
information about educational practices
that support learning and improve academic achievement and access to education opportunities for all students. In
carrying out its grant programs, the Institute provides support for programs of

9-12 University Engineering Design
Challenge Program (AFOSR)
AFOSR, in conjunction with the AFRL
Rapid Reaction Team, announces a program to promote and sustain university
research and education focused on innovative military systems and related technologies. This program will be structured
as a yearly design challenge, with the
objectives and constraints of the design
specified by the AFRL management team
at the beginning of the academic year and
a competition amongst the undergraduate
university teams to determine the best
design to be held at the end of the academic year. The winner of this yearly
competition will be encouraged to apply
for additional projects as they are
announced to continue their exemplary
research, possibly incorporating elements
of the other design solutions. This
announcement is to select a set of university contestants that will conduct this
research and participate in the design
challenges for three years, primarily
focused on problems and research related
