Limited Submissions
Limited submission programs have
sponsor restrictions on the number of
proposals that may be submitted by a
single institution and will require institutional screening to determine which
applications will be submitted. Dr. Jim
Guikema, Associate Vice President for
Research, is the internal coordinator for
limited submission programs. Please
notify him at 785-532-6195, email:
guikema@ksu.edu, by the Internal due

GENERAL
13-1 Software Infrastructure for
Sustained Innovation (SI2) (NSF)
Computation is accepted as the third pillar
supporting innovation and discovery in
science and engineering and is central to
NSF’s future vision of Cyberinfrastructure
Framework for 21st Century Science and
Engineering (CF21). Software is an integral part of the computation paradigm and
a primary modality for realizing the CF21
vision. NSF is establishing a new program,
Software Infrastructure for Sustained
Innovation (SI2), with the overarching
goal of transforming innovations in
research and education into sustained software resources that are an integral part of
the cyberinfrastructure. SI2 is a long-term
investment focused on catalyzing new
thinking, paradigms, and practices in using
software to understand natural, human,
and engineered systems. The SI2 program
envisions three classes of awards: 1) Scientific Software Elements (SSE); 2) Scientific Software Integration (SSI); and 3)
Scientific Software Innovation Institutes
(S212). The FY 2010 SI2 competition will
be limited to SSE and SSI awards. An individual may participate as Principal Investigator, co-Principal Investigator or other
Senior Personnel in at most two full pro-

13-2 Food Aid Nutrition
Enhancement Program (USDA)
The purpose of the Food Aid Nutrition
Education Program (FANEP) is to
enhance the short and long-term health
of individuals, especially infants and
young children, at risk for or suffering
from malnutrition by further improving
the nutritional content, product composition, packaging and other components of
food products delivered through humanitarian assistance programs. FANEP
grantees will develop and field test new
ready-to-use foods, fortified blended
foods, high energy foods, micronutrient
powders or other food products designed
to improve the nutritional delivery and
functional form of humanitarian food
assistance. USDA-NIFA-FANEP003016 (GG 3/29/10)

13-3 Food and Agricultural Science
National Needs Graduate Fellowship
Grants (USDA)
The fellowships supported through the
Food and Science National Needs Graduate and Postgraduate Fellowship Grants
Program (NNF) are intended to encourage outstanding and committed students
to pursue and complete graduate degrees
in critical areas of national needs,
through graduate programs at eligible
institutions. The support provided
through this NNF program, is a student
stipend for the Fellow and a cost-of-education allowance to the institution. NIFA
intends to support graduate Fellowship
training grants for both Master’s and

EDUCATION
13-4 Special Focus Competition: The
U.S.-Russia Program: Improving
Research and Educational Activities in
Higher Education (ED)
The U.S.-Russia Program encourages
cooperative education programs between
institutions of higher education (IHEs) in
the Russian Federation and the United
States of America. The objective of this
program is to provide grants that demonstrate partnerships between Russian and
American IHEs that contribute to the
development and promotion of educational opportunities between the two
nations. The aim is to use the educational
content as the vehicle for learning languages, cultural appreciation, sharing
knowledge, and forming long-term relationships between the two countries. EDGRANTS-032510-001 (GG 3/25/10

awardees to develop and implement with
the CNST a Postdoctoral Researcher and
Visiting Fellow Measurement Science
and Engineering Program. This program
is intended to promote research, training,
and practical experience in nanoscale science and technology on-site at the CNST,
and to advance the CNST’s mission to
support the development of nanotechnology through research on measurement
and fabrication methods, standards and
technology, and by operating a state-ofthe-art nanofabrication facility, the NanoFab. 2010-CNST-01 (GG 3/24/10

Information Network (PPIN) Grants
Program (EPA)
The Pollution Prevention Information
Network (PPIN) supports grantees that
form a national network of pollution prevention (P2) information tools and service
providers. Proposals shall describe: 1)
how the work will meet EPA grant
requirements; 2) how the activities will
address one or more of the P2 program
strategic goals; 3) how collaboration and
coordination will meet the needs of a specific audience; and 4) how activities, outputs and outcomes will be measured.

geochemistry of the Solar System bodies
(planets, satellites, including the Earth’s
Moon, and small Solar System bodies).
The goal of this program is to support
research projects that increase the understanding of the chemical origin of the
Solar System and the processes by which
its planets and small bodies have evolved
to their present states. NASA is particularly interested in proposals for samplefocused research projects that closely support its missions for exploring the Solar
System or that contribute to the development of future missions.

13-10 Adherence Studies in
Adolescents with Chronic Kidney or
Urologic Diseases, or Diabetes (R01)
(NIH)
Adherence to a prescribed treatment regimen, including medications, devices and
behavioral recommendations, can significantly impact morbidity and mortality for
patients with chronic diseases, including
chronic kidney or urologic disease and
diabetes. When adherence to complex and
seemingly rigid treatment regimens is
poor, the results can be tragic. Adolescence can also be a particularly challenging time for adherence given the
completing demands in an adolescent’s
life, the unique development changes, and
rapidly changing set of responsibilities as
they transition to adulthood. There are
few studies in pediatrics beyond the HIV
literature that address non-adherence. The
purpose of the FOA is to support research
to improve adherence in adolescents with
chronic kidney or urologic diseases, or
diabetes. RFA-DK-10-004 (NIHG 3/12/

13-11 Modeling of Infectious Disease
Agent Systems (U01) (NIH)
This Funding Opportunity Announcement
(FOA) issued by the National Institute of
General Medical Sciences, National Institutes of Health, encourages Cooperative
Agreement (U01) applications from institutions/organizations that propose to provide the U.S. scientific and public health
communities better resources, knowledge,
and tools to improve their ability to identify and prevent the spread of diseases
resulting from the emergence or intentional release of pathogens and their products. Research projects will become part
of the Models of Infectious Disease Agent
Study (MIDAS) Network. This FOA is a
reannouncement of a prior FOA (RFA
GM-09-001). The MIDAS Network consists of a centralized information technology resource, a Centers of Excellence
component and, with this announcement,
the continuation of a network of multidisciplinary scientists conducting computational and mathematical research to
improve the ability to detect, control, and
prevent emerging infectious diseases
caused by naturally occurring or intentionally released pathogens, including
those relevant to biodefense. RFA-GM11-002 (GG 3/16/10)
