Limited Submissions
Limited submission programs have
sponsor restrictions on the number of
proposals that may be submitted by a
single institution and will require institutional screening to determine which
applications will be submitted. Dr. Jim
Guikema, Associate Vice President for
Research, is the internal coordinator for
limited submission programs. Please
notify him at 785-532-6195, email:
guikema@ksu.edu, by the Internal due
date listed in the Funding Bulletin or by
at least two months prior to the sponsor
deadline if you wish to submit to a limited submission program. Currently

GENERAL
30-1 Joint DMS/NIGMS Initiative to
Support Research at the Interface of the
Biological and Mathematical Sciences
(DMS/NIGMS) (NSF)
The Division of Mathematical Sciences at
the National Science Foundation and the
National Institute of General Medical Sciences at the National Institutes of Health
plan to support research in mathematics
and statistics on questions in the biological
and biomedical sciences. Both agencies
recognize the need and urgency for promoting research at the interface between
the mathematical sciences and the life sciences. This competition is designed to
encourage new collaborations, as well as
to support existing ones. NSF 10-579

Deadline: 10/1/2010, 10/3/2011
AGRICULTURE
30-2 Basic Research to Enable
Agricultural Development (BREAD)
(NSF)
The National Science Foundation (NSF)
and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
Vol. 19, No. 30
(BMGF) are partnering to support a new
research program to be administered by
NSF. The Objective of the BREAD Program is to support innovative basic scientific research designed to address key
constraints to small holder agriculture in
the developing world. A significant distinction between BREAD and other NSF
programs is that proposals to BREAD
must make a clear and well-defined connection between the outcomes of the proposed basic research and its direct
relevance and potential application to
agriculture in the developing world. The
Program’s focus is on novel, transformative basic research at the proof-of-concept stage rather than its application or
development. Especially encouraged are
original proposals that address major
constraints to the productivity of crops
important to small holder farmers, or on
the development of novel and efficient
production practices. An investigator
may serve as PI or Co-PI on only one
proposal submitted in response to this
solicitation.

that are scientifically timely, and that benefit from the intellectual contributions of
researchers with expertise in a number of
computing fields and/or sub-fields. The
cross-cutting programs for FY 2011 are:
Network Science and Engineering; Smart

Colorado State University manages the
Livestock-Climate Change CRSP under
a five-year Leader with Associates
Award from the US Agency for International Development (USAID). This
Request for Applications (RFP) will fund
proposals that develop connections
between the US and Host Countries for
scientific research, capacity building, and
institutional strengthening to improve the
livelihoods of small-scale livestock producers. Proposals are expected to reduce
vulnerability, increase adaptive capacity,
and augment the income of livestock
producers in lower-income countries
where agriculture systems are rapidly
changing, available resources are shrinking, and climate change is having an
impact. The host countries of interest for
this RFP are semi-arid regions of livestock production in the priority countries
of Ethiopia, Kenya, Mali, Senegal, Tanzania, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Mongolia,
and Kazakhstan.

30-6 Expeditions in Computing (NSF)
ARTS & HUMANITIES
HEALTH & LIFE SCIENCES
30-4 Collaborative Research (NEH)
Collaborative Research Grants support
original research undertaken by a team of
two or more scholars, for full-time or
part-time activities for periods of at least
one year up to a maximum of three years.
The Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE)
has created the Expeditions in Computing
(Expeditions) program to provide the
CISE research and education community
with the opportunity to pursue ambitious,
fundamental research agendas that promise to define the future of computing and
information. In planning Expeditions,
investigators are encouraged to come
together within or across departments or
institutions to combine their creative talents in the identification of compelling,
transformative research agendas that
promise disruptive innovations in computing and information for many years to
come. An individual may participate in no
more than one preliminary or full proposal as PI, co-PI, or senior personnel.

30-8 Roses 2010: Astrobiology:
Exobiology and Evolutionary Biology
(NASA)
The goal of NASA’s Exobiology and Evolutionary Biology program is to understand the origin, evolution, distribution,
and future of life in the Universe.
Research is centered on the origin and
early evolution of life, the potential of life
to adapt to different environments, and
the implications for life elsewhere. This
research is conducted in the context of
NASA’s ongoing exploration of our stellar neighborhood and the identification of
biosignatures for in situ and remote sensing applications. Research in this area
seeks to delineate the galactic and planetary conditions conducive to the origin of
life. Research in the area of prebiotic evolution seeks to understand the pathways
and processes leading from the origin of
planetary bodies to the origin of life. The
goal of research into the early evolution
of life is to determine the nature of the
most primitive organisms and the environment in which they evolved. Research
associated with the study of the evolution
of advanced life seeks to determine the
biological and environmental factors
leading to the development of multicellularity on Earth and the potential distribution of complex life in the Universe.

30-9 New Transatlantic Networks
Leducq)
Foundation Leducq was created by Jean
and Sylviane Ludecq in 1996. Having had
significant business interests and personal
connections in Europe and the United
States, the Leducqs oriented the foundation towards collaborative medical
research, believing that the battle against
cardiovascular and neurovascular disease
should be waged at the international level.
By forging scientific alliances that transcend national borders, and promoting the
education of young researchers who
thrive in an international context, Foundation Leducq hopes to encourage innovative research, an efficient use of
resources, and the development of longterm collaborations that will continue to
meet the challenges of cardiovascular and
neurovascular disease.

Health, encourages Research Project
Grant (R01) applications from institutions/organizations that propose to
develop and evaluate a set of outcome
