Student Life Units (rev. 10/09 and 7/11)
Academic year: __2010-2011______
Student Life Unit/Program: Lafene Health Center Laboratory

In one paragraph, summarize your Annual Progress Report
Lafene Health Center Laboratory employed a total of six student workers in the 2010-2011
academic year. All six completed the first two sets of tasks reflected in learning outcomes 1 and 2.
Two students left before a six month period, and did not complete the third set of tasks. The
remaining four students successfully completed them.

2008-2009 APR Summary are posted -- N/A
1) List the complete set of Student Learning Outcomes/Objectives for your unit (all SLOs identified for
your unit)
Outcome 1: Students will complete orientation in the department, to include training in
bloodbourne pathogens, infection control, and general medical safety.
Outcome 2: Students will complete initial training of the job duties they will perform.
Outcome 3: Students will demonstrate competency in the job duties they will perform.
2) Identify the Student Learning Outcomes/Objectives (from the full list above) that were assessed for
this Annual Progress Report and how they are inclusive of the university undergraduate SLOs
(knowledge, communication, critical thinking, diversity, academic and professional integrity).
All three of the above outcomes were assessed for this report.
Lafene Health Center Laboratory is not part of a degree program. These assessed measures are built
around the federal CLIA requirements for personnel working in clinical laboratories.
Certainly, the student must demonstrate acquired knowledge and critical thinking to complete these tasks.
Integrity and communication are essential in the clinical lab.
3) For each learning outcome, describe (a) the measures used (at least one direct measure should be
used), (b) the sample of students from whom data were collected, (c) the timetable for the collection,
and (d) the forum in which the measures were administered. (Examples of direct measures can be
accessed at http://www.k-state.edu/assessment/plans/measures/direct.htm).
Outcome 1: a) orientation is done by meetings with department directors, viewing videos
and power point presentations and taking tests over the material presented.
b) All laboratory student assistants were included. (6)
c) Orientation must be finished within the first month of the student’s employment.
d) Direct meetings, power point presentations, videos, online testing
Outcome 2: a) Training is done by one on one interaction between the student and the
Tech.
b) All laboratory student assistants were included. (6)
c) The training occurs during the first weeks of the student’s employment.
d) Direct demonstration of the task by the teaching Tech, then performance of the task by
the student worker.
Outcome 3: (a) Competency demonstration is done by the Tech directing observing the
student performing the task. This should be done with in the first six months of the
student’s employment.
b) All laboratory student assistants were included. (6) Two students left employment
before 6 months and did not finish this task. The remaining four students successfully
completed this.
c) First six months of employment, and then annually after that.
d) Direct observation of the student performing the task.
4) Describe the results of the assessment. (What do they tell you about student learning? What did you learn
about strengths and weaknesses of your unit?) If specific results are not available, describe the progress
that has been made on the initiatives included in the approved assessment plan.
All six students were able to complete the orientation and training. This tells me that the
training model is adequate and appropriate.
5) Describe the actions and/or revisions that were implemented in response to the previous year’s
assessment results and the effects on student learning observed on this year’s SLOs.
NA
6) Describe the process by which staff reviewed the results of this year’s SLOs and the actions
and/or revisions that are planned in response to the assessment results. (Include changes that may be
made to unit SLOs or to the general assessment strategy)
NA
7) If needed, revise the department’s Assessment Plan for the next academic year. Attach your
assessment plan to this report.
This assessment plan will remain the same for the next cycle. If testing changes occur, the plan
will be revised to reflect those changes.
