2001 Vegetable Survey Introduction
In 1990, a biennial survey of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service Agents was
implemented. This survey was intended to provide much needed data on
vegetable acreage and yields by cultural practice, season and irrigation methods.
The survey was designed to be a comprehensive instrument for gathering data
on the various vegetable crops grown in Georgia. The collected data is used
extensively by the Extension service as well as by agencies and companies that
support the vegetable industry in Georgia. In 2000, the vegetable survey was
combined with the annual Farm Gate Value Report survey. The Farm Gate
survey also relies on agent’s reports and attempts to measure value of
production, at the farm gate, for a wide range of commodities in Georgia,
including row crops, vegetables, fruits and nuts, poultry and eggs, forestry and
livestock. The two surveys were a natural match and combining them has
enhanced both reports.
The results of the vegetable survey are provided in this paper. In 2001, agents
reported a total of 191,419 acres of vegetables grown in Georgia. This includes
a wide range of vegetables, from broccoli to watermelons. In fact, over 30 types
of vegetables were reported. Roughly 95% of these vegetables are grown for the
fresh market with 5% going to processing.
Users of this report will find there are a variety of sources for vegetable acreage,
yield, and value. These sources include this report, the Georgia Agricultural
Statistics Services and the Census of Agriculture. The first tables of this report
show the Georgia Agricultural Statistic Services’ vegetable estimates for 2001
and compare them to the Extension results. The Extension results and the
Georgia Agricultural Statistic Service results are rarely equal to each other.
Reasons for these differences abound and are mostly related to the data
collection method. Extension estimates rely only on Cooperative Extension
Service County Agents. Estimated yields for the year are available to the Agents
if they are unaware of local growing conditions. Extension estimates do not
distinguish between planted and harvested acres. We do emphasize to the
Agents to report harvested acres. The comparisons provided here are not
meant to question or to justify the accuracy of either source. Users of the
data, however, should be aware of these differences. Extension agents
reported about twelve percent more total acres than Georgia Agricultural
Statistics Service for nine selected crops. Extension estimates ranged from 78%
to 221% of Georgia Agricultural Statistic estimates.
During the 2000 to 2001 period, extension agents reported a 3% decrease in
vegetable acreage. The fastest acreage growth rates were reported for broccoli
(note, however, the total increase was only 4 acres), spinach, and winter squash,
as shown in table 3. Crops with the fastest decline rates in acreage include
English peas, snap beans and lettuce.

1
Vegetable acreage is ranked in table 4. Watermelons continue to be the state’s
largest single vegetable in acreage. Sweet corn moved back into second place.
Table 5 breaks the acreage down by market, cultural practice and irrigation
practice. Spring, fresh (bareground), irrigated vegetables continue to constitute
over half of the total vegetable acres in Georgia. Vegetable yields are shown,
along with acres, in further detail in tables 6-8. Yields are a weighted average
by acreage.
Values are reported in this report in table 9. Please note again that these
estimates may not correspond with Georgia Agricultural Statistics reports. Prices
used in Extension estimates do not account for differences in quality and
quantity. This will explain some of the value differences as well as the reasons
given above. Onions are the highest value generators in Georgia despite
watermelons having more acreage. Further break down of values can be found
in the 2001 Georgia Farm Gate Value Report published by the Center for
Agribusiness and Economic Development.
The final section of this report is for use by the Vegetable Team. It includes a
breakdown by county of the acreage and yields for each commodity. The first
section gives acreage data and the second yield data.
