This survey was intended to provide much needed data on vegetable acreage and yields by cultural practice, season and irrigation methods. The survey was designed to be a comprehensive instrument for gathering data on the various vegetable crops grown in Georgia. The collected data is used extensively by the Extension service as well as by agencies and companies that support the vegetable industry in Georgia. In 2000, the vegetable survey was combined with the annual Farm Gate Value Report survey. The Farm Gate survey also relies on agent’s reports and attempts to measure value of production, at the farm gate, for a wide range of commodities in Georgia, including row crops, vegetables, fruits and nuts, poultry and eggs, forestry and livestock. The two surveys were a natural match and combining them has enhanced both reports. The results of the vegetable survey are provided in this paper. In 2001, agents reported a total of 191,419 acres of vegetables grown in Georgia. This includes a wide range of vegetables, from broccoli to watermelons. In fact, over 30 types of vegetables were reported. Roughly 95% of these vegetables are grown for the fresh market with 5% going to processing. Users of this report will find there are a variety of sources for vegetable acreage, yield, and value. These sources include this report, the Georgia Agricultural Statistics Services and the Census of Agriculture. The first tables of this report show the Georgia Agricultural Statistic Services’ vegetable estimates for 2001 and compare them to the Extension results. The Extension results and the Georgia Agricultural Statistic Service results are rarely equal to each other. Reasons for these differences abound and are mostly related to the data collection method. Extension estimates rely only on Cooperative Extension Service County Agents. Estimated yields for the year are available to the Agents if they are unaware of local growing conditions. Extension estimates do not distinguish between planted and harvested acres. We do emphasize to the Agents to report harvested acres. The comparisons provided here are not meant to question or to justify the accuracy of either source. Users of the data, however, should be aware of these differences. Extension agents reported about twelve percent more total acres than Georgia Agricultural Statistics Service for nine selected crops. Extension estimates ranged from 78% to 221% of Georgia Agricultural Statistic estimates. During the 2000 to 2001 period, extension agents reported a 3% decrease in vegetable acreage. The fastest acreage growth rates were reported for broccoli (note, however, the total increase was only 4 acres), spinach, and winter squash, as shown in table 3. Crops with the fastest decline rates in acreage include English peas, snap beans and lettuce. 1 1 Vegetable acreage is ranked in table 4. Watermelons continue to be the state’s largest single vegetable in acreage. Sweet corn moved back into second place. Table 5 breaks the acreage down by market, cultural practice and irrigation practice. Spring, fresh (bareground), irrigated vegetables continue to constitute over half of the total vegetable acres in Georgia. Vegetable yields are shown, along with acres, in further detail in tables 6-8. Yields are a weighted average by acreage. Values are reported in this report in table 9. Please note again that these estimates may not correspond with Georgia Agricultural Statistics reports. Prices used in Extension estimates do not account for differences in quality and quantity. This will explain some of the value differences as well as the reasons given above. Onions are the highest value generators in Georgia despite watermelons having more acreage. Further break down of values can be found in the 2001 Georgia Farm Gate Value Report published by the Center for Agribusiness and Economic Development. The final section of this report is for use by the Vegetable Team. It includes a breakdown by county of the acreage and yields for each commodity. The first section gives acreage data and the second yield data. 2 2 Vegetable Acreage Estimates 2001 Vegetable Acreage 0 - 50 51 - 500 501 - 2,500 2,501 - 5,000 5,000 + 3 Georgia Vegetable Acreage by Crop 2001 Bell Peppers Other Peppers Other Zucchini Squash Cabbage Cantaloupe Carrots Watermelon Greens Tomato Cucumbers Eggplant Lima Beans Sweet Corn Bell Peppers Other Peppers Cabbage Cantaloupe Carrots Greens Cucumbers Eggplant Lima Beans Okra Onions Snap Beans Southern Peas Sweet Corn Tomato Watermelon Squash Zucchini Other Total: Southern Peas Snap Beans 4 Okra Onions 3.3% 0.5% 5.3% 3.7% 2.8% 12.0% 7.4% 0.6% 1.6% 0.3% 7.9% 8.6% 3.6% 12.6% 3.1% 18.0% 4.7% 2.0% 1.9% 100.0% Table 1: Georgia Agriculture Statistics Service Vegetables: Acreage and Yield Georgia 2000 & 2001 2000 Acres 2001 Acres 2001 as percent of 2000 Crop Planted Harvested Yield Planted Harvested Yield Planted Harvested Yield Beans, Lima 3,500 3,100 20 3,900 3,700 34 111% 119% 170% Beans, Snap 16,000 15,500 56 16,500 16,000 60 103% 103% 107% Cabbage 7,900 7,100 350 8,600 8,100 300 109% 114% 86% Cantaloupe 6,800 5,500 165 5,900 5,300 160 87% 96% 97% Corn, Sweet 23,000 21,000 160 25,500 25,000 130 111% 119% 81% Cucumbers 12,000 11,000 160 15,000 14,000 175 125% 127% 109% Onions 15,000 12,400 255 14,500 13,500 190 97% 109% 75% Tomatoes 4,000 3,900 350 2,700 2,600 365 68% 67% 104% Watermelon 28,000 24,000 195 24,000 22,000 265 86% 92% 136% Total 116,200 103,500 116,600 110,200 100% 106% Table 2: Comparison of Acreage and Yields: GASS and Extension GASS 2001 Estimates Extension Acres and Yield Estimates Crop Planted Harvested Yield (cwt) Acres Ext/GASS Yield (cwt) Ext/ GASS Beans, Lima 3,900 3,700 34 3,034 78% 38 112% Beans, Snap 16,500 16,000 60 16,531 100% 52 87% Cabbage 8,600 8,100 300 10,107 118% 301 100% Cantaloupe 5,900 5,300 160 7,047 119% 201 126% Corn, Sweet 25,500 25,000 130 24,104 95% 149 115% Cucumbers 15,000 14,000 175 14,133 94% 205 117% Onions 14,500 13,500 190 15,214 105% 219 115% Tomatoes 2,700 2,600 365 5,961 221% 427 117% Watermelon 24,000 22,000 265 34,481 144% 400 151% Total 116,600 110,200 130,612 112% 5 Table 3: Georgia Vegetable Acreage Comparisons: 1996, 1998, 2000, and 2001 Crop 1996 1998 2000 2001 96/01 00/01 Beans, Lima 3,724 3,041 2,670 3,034 81% 114% Beans, Pole 4,166 425 319 588 14% 184% Beans, Snap 8,781 15,443 26,001 16,531 188% 64% Broccoli N/A N/A 2 6 300% Cabbage 9,791 7,924 9,191 10,107 103% 110% Cantaloupe Carrots Collards Corn, Sweet Cucumbers 6,938 627 8,102 18,919 10,147 7,840 1,205 7,360 19,356 9,244 6,839 4,035 7,249 25,623 14,549 7,047 5,328 8,657 24,104 14,133 102% 850% 107% 127% 139% 103% 132% 119% 94% 97% 1,650 1,434 N/A 699 2,850 1,065 1,205 N/A 249 3,043 1,260 1,410 346 N/A 3,910 1,230 1,517 270 N/A 4,530 75% 106% 98% 108% 78% 159% 116% Okra Onions, Dry Onions, Green Peas, English Peas, Southern 1,563 16,646 550 441 5,886 629 15,071 205 286 6,490 540 15,515 224 917 7,439 530 15,214 290 183 6,967 34% 91% 53% 41% 118% 98% 98% 129% 20% 94% Pepper, Bell Pepper, Banana Pepper, Hot Potatoes, Irish Potatoes, Sweet 5,709 N/A 662 1,665 1,092 4,441 N/A 483 371 1,340 6,342 220 801 867 597 6,312 209 788 829 863 111% 119% 50% 79% 100% 95% 98% 96% 145% Pumpkins Spinach Squash, Winter Squash, Yellow Squash, Zucchini 324 370 438 11,581 4,191 229 331 610 7,667 3,517 366 30 292 8,269 3,844 510 182 544 8,544 3,741 157% 49% 124% 74% 89% 139% 607% 186% 103% 97% 5,729 7,053 525 35,622 177,875 8,050 5,034 969 33,430 166,553 6,206 6,924 307 33,894 196,998 5,961 7,815 374 34,481 191,419 104% 111% 71% 97% 108% 96% 113% 122% 102% 97% Eggplant Kale Lettuce Misc.
