EXPRESSIVE ARTS
Art and Design
Look at the original storyboarding for the advert
and consider ways they could make the advert
more local to their own school.
Performance and Presentations
Learners could present their new adverts in a
variety of ways (filmed, animated, presented
using PowerPoint.)

LITERACY AND ENGLISH
Consider the purpose of the text and whether it
meets this purpose.
Consider the genre of this text and how the
advert follows the motifs of the genre.
Study the marketing slogan ‘Made in Scotland
from Girders,’ considering the implications of
this. They could create a new slogan for
Modern Scotland.
Explore the language used in the song. Is it
formal/informal and consider why has this
technique been used?

This interdisciplinary approach shows some possible learning
opportunities which link to the experience and outcome codes shown.
These are ideas for starting points, though, and could be amended
with other links depending on your context. In this example we have
highlighted a lead curriculum area, however, to suit needs and interests a
different curriculum area could easily be used.
SOCIAL STUDIES
With particular reference to the images in the
text learners could consider the Social Studies
aspects of:
Historical content: Consider the implications of
using both Eilean Donan Castle and Edinburgh
Castle.
Geographical Content: Explore how the different
areas of Scotland are represented through the
advert e.g. Sheep for the Borders, Stag for the
Highlands, Fishing Boats for the North East of
Scotland. (Are these stereotypical
representations?)

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGIES
LEAD CURRICULUM AREA - MEDIA
Why was television used for this marketing campaign drawing attention to
when the campaign began and when it ended? (Christmas period)
Critically analyse the original Snowman text and comment on the
pertinence of the parody.
Consider the brand placement and the way that it is presented in this text.
Is it successful?
Consider the Forth Railway Bridge image and
study how it was made.
Research the Falkirk Wheel and how
engineering has developed over time.
Consider the ‘Flying Scotsman’ steam train and
its effect on transport technology drawing
attention to the Steam engine being invented in
Scotland.
Consider the representation of the boy (Is he Scottish? How do we know?
Is this due to stereotypical representations?)
(Learners may choose to look at other Irn Bru adverts to develop their
understanding of the Irn Bru marketing campaigns.)
