Interdisciplinary planning approach
Consider the origins of Scots and Gaelic
languages and how they were influenced by
external languages and why. (Learners may
decide to use maps of Europe and beyond to
account for these influences.)
Languages

French/German, Scots, Gaelic and English
Study the decline of Gaelic and Scots.
Examine primary and secondary resources about
the decline of Gaelic and Scots and present a
discussion with an informed view.
This interdisciplinary approach shows some possible learning
opportunities which link to the experience and outcome codes shown.
These are ideas for starting points, though, and could be amended
with other links depending on your context. In this example we have
highlighted a lead curriculum area, however, to suit needs and interests
a different curriculum area could easily be used

Learners in all curricular areas could consider
reactions, feelings and appropriate reactions.
Group discussion about the benefits of living in a multi-lingual country
Read different sources (link to Social Studies) and identify persuasion
techniques.
Study texts in Scots and English and comment on the meaning e.g.
‘Bairnsong’ (Liz Lochhead) or Unrelated Incidents (Tom Leonard.)

French/German, Scots, Gaelic and English.

Gaelic and Scots and present a discussion about
this.

Listen to Gaelic texts and comment on the oral tradition.
Look at and study Gaelic poetry (with translations where appropriate.)

Research the religions of the past and discuss
how these beliefs have developed Scotland’s
religions today.
Research the world religions worshipped by
Scotland’s population.

considering the contribution other religions
have made to Scotland’s society.
