Make a sound story of a sighting of Nessie. (A music
invention using instruments and voice)
This interdisciplinary approach shows some possible learning
opportunities which link to the experience and outcome codes shown.
These are ideas for starting points, though, and could be amended
with other links depending on your context. In this example we have
highlighted a lead curriculum area, however, to suit needs and interests
a different curriculum area could easily be used
LEAD CURRICULUM AREA - LITERACY AND ENGLISH
Consider the reliability of the sources of information
about Nessie and the sightings.
Create a timeline of events which explain Nessie.
Study the geographic area where Nessie lives.
Study the weather of the area.
Study the water in the Loch e.g. is it fresh?
What other animals live in the loch? Would there be
enough food?
Make a decision about whether you believe in Nessie
or not and explore ways to attract people to the area.

Study food chains of animals living in and
around Loch Ness thinking about what Nessie
might eat.
Look at the freezing process of water and
consider the effect of the freezing process on

to limitations of the senses. Are they reliable?

SCIENCE
A literary study of Scots language using the Knowledge of
Language website.
Reading
Look at rhyming structure and make comments about it.
Look at the different characters in the poem (who/what are they?
What are they like?)
Using pictures as texts and newspaper articles as a text – read
about the Nessie sightings, make notes about the main ideas and
begin to summarise.
Writing
Write a Nessie Poem with the same structure.
Write a poem about a created monster with the same structure.
Create a newspaper report deciding if Nessie is real or not.
Talking and Listening
Recite poem trying to engage audience with gesture, expression,
emphasis etc.
