Registration • • • • • Christine thanked all as the Course Units Registration and Orientation process went well (which took place 25 September – 06 October): There seemed to be few problems with Portico - the new, online student registration system; there were very few students that have registered on Portico that have not also been to see us; It is important that tutors are clear about the students level during assessments when signing registration forms; thanks to Ayanna – who has been very efficient and helpful with room bookings; the total numbers of students registered was given out to all. 2 . Meeting Schedule • • • • An updated version of the Course Unit meeting schedule for the year given to all; tutors are requested to be here during Reading week (06-10 November); the dates/times for Syllabi and Language Team Meetings discussed – this is to be confirmed; there will be a Staff Development session about Testing Academic Reading Skills on Wednesday 08 November – this would be particularly beneficial for Coordinators; on Friday 10 November there is a session about incorporating academic sources into students’ texts – this is aimed at all Course Units as well as English for Academic Purposes tutors. 3 . Mini Observations • Mini Observations undertaken by Christine Hoffmann and Madeleine Du Vivier will be taking place on all Course Unit classes during the week beginning 13 November; all tutors need to complete a lesson plan beforehand – Christine will email the template Course Unit Teaching Committee Meeting 06 November 2006 • grid for the lesson plan; Christine and Madeleine will give feedback to all – they will also give individual feedback if required. 4 . Reading & Writing Examinations • • • The deadlines for the drafts of the Reading & Writing exams is shown in Meeting Schedule; All teams asked for feedback on how the exam writing preparation process is going – all reported that it going smoothly; Claudia Bluhm will be the External Examiner for German this year. 5. College Developments • • • • Christine Hoffmann had a Meeting with the Provost who made positive comments about Languages being a compulsory part of study. Figures showing number of students enrolled for Evening Courses, English for Academic Purposes and Course Units were distributed to all; We may offer Mandarin as a Course Unit from next year – Levels A and B as 0.5 units and therefore also Level A/B 1.0 unit; There will be a new English course unit which we hope to be able to run from 2007 – more information on this to follow. 6. IQR • There will be an Internal Audit taking place at the start of March – we shall all meet to prepare for this. 7. Self-Access Centre • Self Access Centre representatives – please contact Antonella Veccia to discuss SelfAccess Centre materials. 8. Course Unit website/Content Management System • • • Tutors should see Adam Salisbury in the Course Unit office to arrange their user preferences for editing/uploading their own material onto the Course Units microsite for students to view ; The new Self Access Centre webpage has greatly improved; There is a link on the Course Units webpage to the Self Access Centre pages, in particular to the sections with information about each country. 9.
