24 January, 2014, Busan, South Korea
The 2014 International Conference organized by the Institute for Mediterranean Studies
(IMS) will be held in the city of Busan, South Korea, on the 24 January, 2014, with the title:
“Intercultural
Intercultural Hybridity in Mediterranean Civilizations”.
Civilizations
The ‘Mediterranean’ can be taken as a multiple site of various civilizations in history, of
intense mixtures between peoples and cultures. Connecting Europe, Africa and Asia, the
Mediterranean has seen the emergence of colonization by the Greeks and the Phoenicians;
the ‘Mare Nostrum’ of the Romans; evolved into a field of tensions between Christians and
Muslims; during the nineteenth century it was transformed into a contested theatre of
European hegemony.
Against such a background of historical interconnectivity and mixtures of civilizations the
Mediterranean has always been characterized by its complex intercultural hybridity.
Conference topics include:
The Notion of intercultural hybridity – the theoretical debates from the various disciplines.
Cultural Hybridity in different Mediterranean societies and periods in time.
The Representation of cultural hybridity in philosophy, literature, cinema, the arts in general
as well as in the natural sciences.
Colonialism, Trade expansion and contestation as vectors of cultural hybridity in the region.
Proposals for participation in sessions related to these and other related themes are now
solicited. Proposals for roundtable discussions on the above topics are also welcome. You
are kindly requested to inform IMS about your participation before October 10, 2013.
2013
The Institute for Mediterranean Studies was established in December 1997 as an attached
research organization at Busan University of Foreign Studies(BUFS), with particular
research interests on general aspects of the interchange of civilizations in the Mediterranean
area. With its researchers and scholars of international distinction, the IMS is actively
engaged in pursuing global trends. It is developing advanced documentation on this area of
studies for the sake of Korean educational and academic society. The principal objective of
the IMS is to organize and promote research in all aspects of the Mediterranean region.
Interdisciplinary studies in art, culture, literature, language education and social sciences are
pursued to add to the traditional studies on international relations. The International
Conference 2010 is organized keeping this principal aim in mind.
For the submission of proposals, you are kindly requested to contact the following
