California State University, Fresno Health Careers Opportunity Program Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation Spring 2009 Position: AEW Facilitator Program Description: The Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation Program or LSAMP is one of the National Science Foundation's and California State University system flagship initiatives for helping the Nation meet its Science, Technology, Engineering and Math workforce needs of the twenty-first century. The Fresno State LSAMP program is housed out of the Health Careers Opportunity Program or HCOP office on campus. One of the activities the office conducts under the LSAMP program is the Academic Excellence Workshops (AEW). The Academic Excellence Workshops are a non-remedial academic support program, which targets high-risk courses. Offered to all students enrolled in a particular course, they provide assistance on an outreach basis in regularly scheduled, out-of-class study sessions during the academic year. The Uri Treisman model approach is applied in these workshops. The approach concentrates on the need to create social groups that are based in participants' educational experiences. Participants gain a more complete mastery of material, enhance their technical communications skills, and increase their ability to work as a team member. These workshops are not remedial; they are independent courses lead by a facilitator (a person who has taken the course and has done well) and are taken to assist and enhance a student’s experience in their math and sciences courses. The workshops are held once per week for 2 hours and are taken for 1 unit – credit/no-credit grading. Students must enroll in order to attend. Minimum Qualifications: The facilitator must be able to communicate and work effectively with a cross section of students from varied ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. Additional requirements are as follows: 1. Must have a grade of "B" or better in the course(s) that the applicant wishes to facilitate. 2. Cumulative GPA must be at least 3.0. – Transcripts must be provided. 3. Must have at least 30 units prior to employment. 4. Must possess good oral and written skills, as well as knowledge in chosen facilitating area(s). 4. Must carry out program activities. 5. Dependable, meet deadlines, punctual. 6.
