Fitness & Nutrition Fables
• No Pain, No Gain
o While you may experience aches and pains initially,
prolonged pain is a clear indication that you should
ease up.
• There is One Best Way to Exercise
o There is not only no best way for everyone, there’s
also no best way for each individuals.
o Be sure to always vary your routine by incorporating
different exercises and training techniques.
o Always choose exercises you enjoy so you will be more
likely to stick with it.
• More Sweat, Less Fat
o This is just not true! The amount you sweat
represents your body’s ability to maintain normal
body temperature. While sweating may cause the
number on the scale to drop, this is water weight (not
fat weight!) which should be replenished after exercise
• Drinking Water Causes Cramps
o Cramps are actually a symptom of dehydration.
• For Women, Lifting Weights Can Make You Look Bulky
o This myth prevents many women from resistance
(strength) training.
o Women don’t produce enough of the muscle building
hormone (testosterone) to significantly “bulk up”.
o It may motivate you to know that the more muscle
mass you have, the more calories you burn during the
day (even at rest!).
• You Can Target One Area of your Body for Weight Loss
o Spot Reduction is not possible.
o Fat is lost or gained throughout the entire body.
• Eating Late At Night Will Cause You To Gain Weight
o The time you eat isn’t as important as what you eat.
Remember, if calories in are greater than calories out,
weight gain will occur (no matter what time it is!).
Special Events
Each semester, we as a staff in the Department of Recreational Sports
and Fitness, plan and organize special events to help target the diverse
needs and interests of the AU community. Past programs have
included a Physical Therapy screening session, Zumba Extravaganza,
Biathlon, Turkey Trot, Blood Drive and more! All events are posted
on our website at www.american.edu/recfit/jfcevents.cfm and
advertised at the Jacobs Fitness Center.

finishers.
In the fall of 2011, the JFC staff hosted its first Zumba night. The
event was offered to all Jacobs Fitness Center members and was

Club Sports
The Club Sports program consists of all recognized clubs. The
Club Sport program compliments the University’s intercollegiate
athletic programs, intramural activities, and physical education

administered by the student membership of that particular
club working in conjunction with the Club Sport Office. The
key to success with this program is student leadership, interest,
participation, and involvement. Club Sports are governed by
the rules and regulations established for all recognized student

“Working at the gym has been a
great experience that has taught me
not only responsibility but also how
to balance the somewhat challenging
expectations of school with a
demanding work schedule. My time
at the gym has been wonderful and
I have met great people and the
atmosphere is always welcoming so it
does not feel like work at all!”
