What are the requirements?
o Minimum GPA of 3.5
o Presenting at a conference
What can the grant money be used for?
o Students presenting their work at conferences may apply for funds to partially defray the
costs of registration, hotel, and travel.
How much can I receive?
o $300 for regional conferences
 Examples: New York, NY | Towson, MD | Baltimore, MD |
o $500 for national conferences
 Examples: New Haven, CT | Cambridge, MA | Ithaca, NY | Kansas City, MO |
o $800 for international conferences
 Examples: Bochum, Germany |
What are the application periods?
o This academic year, funds are distributed across three periods: October 15-January 15,
January 16-April 30, and May 1-August 15. The conference dates determine the period for
which the application will be considered.
When can I apply?
o Students may apply for funds as early as six months in advance of the conference and as
late as two weeks before. After evaluation, they are allocated on a first-come, first-served
basis.
I am part of a team; do we apply together or separately?
o Each member of your team should apply individually.
What documentation is required?
o A copy of your unofficial transcript
o A project proposal (500 words maximum)
 *Note: This is not your paper. The project proposal should be 500 words or fewer,
containing a brief statement of your presentation topic and information on the
conference (what conference, where, and when)
o A confidential letter of recommendation from a faculty sponsor. *Once you have completed
your form, an email will be sent to your selected faculty sponsor. You should let them know
to expect the request for a letter of recommendation.*

I want to study abroad during xx semester; can I use the travel grant money to do so?
o No, the Undergraduate Research Travel Grant money will not be awarded for study abroad
trips; it is for students presenting their work at conferences. If you are looking to fund
study abroad travel, your best starting point would to contact AU Abroad who offers
several funding options and can work with you to explore your options.

Can I receive the Undergraduate Research Travel Grant more than once per year?
o No, Students are eligible for only one award each academic year.
How will I receive my money?
o You will receive a check in the mail at the address you provide.
When will I know if my application is approved?
o Response time depends on a few variables such as completion of the entire application
packet, including the letter of recommendation. It generally takes about a week or a weekand-a-half for the entire review process. Once your application has been approved or
denied, you will receive an email notification from undergradawards@american.edu.
Additionally, you will also receive communication if there is something missing from your
application packet (unless it is the letter of recommendation in which case we will contact
your faculty member after a reasonable period of time).
