organizations.
o Based on past precedent the committee doesn’t feel comfortable funding a band
that isn’t decided yet.
o The effectiveness of Facebook promotions was questioned but it was determined
that the committee couldn’t tell a group how to plan their event.
o The committee did feel there was a lot of merit to the event and the organization
does an outstanding job.
o Past events have been well attended and have been successful.
o The question was raised whether we should not allocate them money because of
vagueness.
o Overall the committee wasn’t comfortable funding the full amount.
Senator Jones moved to allocate $200.00 for promotions for FY14. Senator Blattner seconded
the motion. The motion passed 12-1-0.


o This event will occur before the Who’s Your Buddy event

making new friends in a relax setting
o Will focus on international students but it is open to everyone
 In the past a lot of mingling and connections were made
 Requesting money in part for T-Shirts to help advertise and promote international
buddies
 Past event had a wall to write about different cultures present at K-State
 Discussion:
o The cost of the Union Ballroom can be removed because it is free to student
organizations.
o Based on past precedent the committee doesn’t feel comfortable funding a band
that isn’t decided yet.
o The committee was left questioning the purpose of the event as a whole and its
effectiveness.
o The committee did not feel comfortable using student dollars to fund a celebration
event.
Senator Haley moved to deny funding for the event. Senator Jensby seconded the motion. The
motion passed 13-0-0.
We heard this request last week but choose to table it and hold it in committee to allow for
additional questions to be asked. Here’s a brief recap of the request:
 Traveling to Guatemala during spring break for a service trip
o Ten students will be attending
o Will be installing water filters in the homes of locals
o Dispensing deworming medication in elementary schools
 Will be giving a public presentation at a club meeting when they return
 Will be purchasing tickets in late December
 Fundraising for the trip until they leave
 Will be making presentations to Rotary Clubs and other local groups
 Discussion:
o The timeline for the event left the committee uneasy. The amount raised through
fundraising wasn’t substantial and the tickets haven’t been purchased.
o The group has other opportunities to gain sources of funding.
o Some members of the committee didn’t feel comfortable funding the full amount
because of the piece of bring it back.
 There are several ways that the group could bring it back but don’t have
them planned.
 The intent of bringing it back was important. All students at K-State
deserve the chance to hear about the experience.
October 27, 2013 Meeting Minutes
o Other members of the committee thought that there was merit in the experience
that outweighed the bringing it back piece.
o The discussion then moved whether to fund part of the travel or none of it at all.
At-Large Hovis moved to allocate $500.00 for FY14. At-Large Steinter seconded the motion.
o Discussion on the reasonability of only allocating $500.00 versus a larger amount
was raised.

Senator Wells moved to allocate $750.00 for FY14. At-Large Hovis seconded the motion. The
motion failed 4-8-1.

The Gerontology Club has grown to a large membership with roughly 160 members in a
short period of time
Hosting an event on April 24th at the Alumni Center that will target caregivers, family
members, students, and professionals while focusing on learning to interact with persons
with dementia through the arts
o This is the second year for the event
Hosting speakers Lauren Kessler and Dave Roth

University of Oregon
o She is an award winning author, journalist and Director of Nonfiction
January 26, 2014 Meeting Minutes
o She will be discussing lessons learned from being a caregiver in an Alzheimer’s
facility and having a mother with Alzheimer’s based upon her book
o Dave is a freelance percussionist, performer and teacher for 25 years from New
York
o He will share his work with the Alzheimer’s Association and Broadway
Alzheimer’s iPod Drive
o He will also have a role in an iPod drive on campus
 Also serves as a way for students to learn how the arts (something as small as an iPod)
can improve the quality of life of elders
 The elderly population is growing and many of these individuals will have some form of
dementia and will need services to help care for them
o The event will help students communicate and serve this particular population
 All students can benefit from learning this valuable information
 Discussion:
o The committee thought the event would bring valuable information to both
students and the community about the elderly population.
o Thought the Alumni Center is a great location for a large event
o It is an event that will not only benefit those whose majors are directly applicable
but every student on campus.
o The speakers are very experienced and will bring important insight on the topic.
o It is also impressive how fast the club has grown and how organized the event is.
o Also reassuring that they have done fundraising for the event.
Senator Blattner moved to allocate $2000.00, $1000.00 per LSE fee for FY14. Senator Jensby
seconded the motion. The motion passed 10-0-0.


McCain Student Ambassadors have only been around for about five years
o Club has recently grown from eight to 24 members
The group is funded through Friends of McCain donors
o They participate in a variety of outreach across campus
o The group speaks to students directly about different opportunities students have
to become engaged with the arts through McCain
o Currently in a transition phase of the organization and are currently working on
fundraising activities for next year
Group is seeking to take 20 members on a trip to Kansas City on February 21 st
Purpose is to further educate and equip their members in the arts
On the trip they will take a tour of the Kauffman Center and see the show Harvey
By attending they will better learn how to promote shows at K-State
They will also be exposing K-State to the Kansas City Theater Scene, which brings the
possibility of more shows coming to campus
The event will also allow members to learn how to better complete their jobs within the
organization and network
Discussion:
January 26, 2014 Meeting Minutes
o Members of the committee began questioning the true educational value the trip
would have for the students of K-State as a whole and weren’t sure if it was a
responsible use of student dollars.
o The networking opportunities seemed limited to just the question and answer
period/talk back after the Harvey show.
o The tour of Kauffman Center is very on point with their organization and could be
beneficial to study professionals in the field.
o Discussion about the possibility of awarding partial funding and not funding for
the tickets to Harvey were discussed.
o Committee didn’t know how founded the argument was that the trip would be
exposing K-State to the Kansas City Theater Scene.
Senator Jensby moved to deny the funding request. Intern O’Briant seconded the motion. The
motion passed 9-0-1.

o It is a new organization to K-State as of last year
Organization wants to bring in Send Silence Packing which is a nationally recognized
traveling exhibit based out of Washington D.C.
1,100 backpacks are donated and displayed in a high traffic area of campus to represent the
number of college students lost to suicide each year
Currently looking at hosting the event in the Quad in April
The program could have immeasurable impact on all members of the K-State family
Suicide is the second leading cause of death among college students and the topic is often not
placed at the forefront of our society but is extremely important to the well-being and safety
of each person
The program will help bring life to this statistic as well as start conversations that may lead to
individuals seeking help, support, or just awareness of the issue
The organization has discussed the event with the Office of Student Life, Housing and
Dining, Counseling Services, various Greek Life organizations and Union Programming
Council
The K-State chapter of Active Minds will likely be hosting additional speakers and events on
the day of the program
Discussion:
o The committee thought the event would bring extremely valuable and important
information about a subject not often discussed.
o Members of the committee began questioning the need for $500.00 worth of
flyers since the event will be on display in such a prominent location on campus.
o The expensive price of the event was discussed but the committee determined that
the organization couldn’t control the price of a national exhibit.
o It is impressive how a new organization on campus is bringing in a competitive
traveling exhibit early on.

o The committee thought the group did an excellent job hosting an event this year
that focuses on healthy relationships that can reach a wide variety of students.
o Committee thought the event can offer educational value for students and be less
controversial than in the past.
o Nice to see that the group was partnering with other schools in the state to help
reduce cost. Also nice to see the group getting funds through other organizations.
Senator Marquess moved to allocate $3,075.00 for FY14. Intern O’Briant seconded the motion.

ON THE SPOT

On the Spot is an impromptu entrainment student organization that has roughly 16
members who put on weekly shows in the Union every Thursday
 They also do workshops and presentations to the high schools around Manhattan
 Each year the group competes at a regional impromptu tournament in Kansas City
 This year the group won and earned a wild card spot in the national tournament in
Chicago
 This will be the first time K-State has ever had a team compete at nationals
 The group knows it is a short turn around period but truthfully weren’t expecting to make
it to Chicago this year
 Still working out transportation but are expecting to take a van through motor pool
 They will for sure be taking five members and their advisor but plan on adding more
people if space allows
 At regional and national competitions they also have the chance to network and meet
entertainers from other schools
o This has been known to form partnerships in the past
 Discussion:
o The committee can only fund the group $500.00 regardless of the size of vehicle
acquired because that is the confirmed number of students attending.
o The committee recognized it has a fun and competitive event but questions were
raised about its educational value for students.
 It becomes difficult because it is entrainment. Entrainment is however an
art form.
 It is a chance for On the Spot members to perfect their skills and improve
their performances both on campus and in the community of Manhattan.
 It becomes a chance to celebrate the heritage K-State and Manhattan has
in entrainment industry.
o Ultimately the committee decided that this group was going to their first ever
national competition, representing K-State, and as students we need to find value
in that experience and opportunity.
o It is really impressive that the groups qualified and the committee knows that they
will represent students extremely well.

 Will occur in the International Student Center Multi-purpose room
 Discussion:

different world perspective to students on campus they might not otherwise get to
experience.
o Excellent chance for students to experience a different culture without having to
travel to that country.

The organization is looking to attend an alternative spring break service trip in New
Orleans from March 17th – 22nd

sustainability which they can use to positively impact campus
 It is a 14 hour drive and will be leaving on the 15th and returning the 23rd to make it to
class on Monday
 Members who go will be directly impacted by what they experience in New Orleans and
members who don’t go will be able to hear about the trip from a presentation when they
return
 There was a lot of turnover in the organization this past year so this service trip will be a
nice step in reestablishing the organizations activities and events
 Haven’t done any fundraising yet but have several planned for the future such as a bake
sale
 Discussion:
o The committee felt the event was very educationally focused and directly
applicable to the students’ academic majors.
o The committee also thought it was a very diverse event with an educational
element tied in with a service project.
o There are also direct benefits that can be gained on campus from sending students
to learn more about green buildings and sustainability.
o Ultimately the committee didn’t feel that there was anything wrong with funding
the full request.

Hosting speaker Holly Lorka on March 27th
She is a comedian who has previously performed for K-State Salina
o Performed in several festivities and opened for numerous celebrities
While her presentation won’t strictly be educational, she does focus on highlighting her
life experiences and growing pains in order to light-heartedly and humorously focus on
how we as students and young adults can interact with one another regardless of our
gender or sexual orientation.
Expecting over 200 people in the Union Ballroom
o At Salina they had 75-100 people but this year have really increased promotions
The group normally doesn’t host events like this so using all their funds would deplete
their resources dramatically
March 2, 2014 Meeting Minutes
o They do have $300.00 set aside for this particular event
 Group already has flyers designed just need the funds to print them
 Discussion:
o The committee saw this as an opportunity to provide students with an event that
would be both culturally and educationally related.
o The majority of the events we fund tend to be educational and this is slightly more
cultural.
o In the past the committee hasn’t funded the promotions in full if the group doesn’t
have specific plans for the monies use.
o Overall the event seems to be extremely organized and the speaker appears very
experienced on the topic.

Wanting to host Jason Treuting from April 11-13th
o He will be instructing students on a piece of his composition called “Amid the

 Members of the group will be playing the world premiere of his piece on Sunday the 13 th
 The days prior he will be instructing classes and giving lessons to students
 A video accompaniment for each movement of the performance will be created by the
advanced media class on campus
 Also Wildcat Watch will be creating and broadcasting a documentary about this unique
performance
 Overall he would be in contact to close to 50 people plus those that attend the concert on
the 13th
 The group is requesting $800 solely for the LSE fee
 They aren’t looking to do many more promotions for the event because of the limited
space of the concert and previous promotions around McCain
 Discussion:
o Some members of the committee raised questions about how exclusive the
performance and event was.
 Due to the lack of interests in additional promotions it felt at times like the
event wasn’t open to all students.
o It was recognized that the event could reach a multitude of students after the
concert takes place because of the documentary by Wildcat Watch and the work
of the advanced media class.
o Members of the committee thought bringing in the composer would provide a
benefital experience to students that they couldn’t gain in the classroom.


The first is $500 for travel to attend their three-day regional summit in St. Louis next
March
 They are hoping to take their five officers who will be paying some money out of pocket
to attend the summit
 Hoping to do several fundraisers such as bake sales and to help pay for the trip
 The next is $250 for their annual graduate recognition ceremony
o Requesting funds for plaques, space rental, and catering for the event
 Looking at hosting the event in the Union
 Discussion:
o Each request has to be on its own budget request form
 Since the first request is over a year away regardless the committee
couldn’t fund that amount. The committee decided instead to focus on the
second amount. Chair Kennedy will encourage them to apply for funding
again for their regional summit as the date approaches.
o The committee wasn’t comfortable with funding the second request.
 It isn’t possible to fund catering or plaques according to regulations.
 Began questioning the educational value of the funding request.
o The committee also wasn’t sure were the fee for space rental was coming from.
o Overall the request didn’t seem to be an effective use of student dollars.
Senator Haley moved to deny funding. Senator Wells seconded the motion. The motion passed
10-0-0.

o It is a large undertaking with an event each and everyday
o Each has an individual focus and purpose. They are all extremely will organized
and all give a unique perspective on the international community.
The group has done a wide variety of fundraising throughout the year to help offset the
dollar cost. They recognized student dollars should pay for the entire event.
The organization is a group of American and International students representing over 100
countries
The group tries to celebrate diversity and host cultural events. The three objectives of the
organization include: cooperation, understanding and fellowship
The space for the event has been persevered since last year
The group is mainly requesting funds for promotions
o Really looking to increase participation and in order to achieve this than
individuals will need to know about the event
o Goal is to continue to improve and grow the event
Also requesting funds for a technician for use during the talent show because of the
heavy demands of the event.
The organization has a lot of experience hosting the event as it has become an annual
tradition


Discussion:
o The committee was extremely comfortable funding the request.
 Due to regulations the committee couldn’t fund the reusable banner.

budget. Impressive how much they are doing with so little.
o The event will bring a variety of educational value and benefit to students, faculty
and the Manhattan community.


Overall
o Very zizzy meeting
o Denied funding to Baja SAE Team and Human-Powered Vehicle Design Team
because they didn’t show up 8-1-0
o Can’t allocate funding to Agriculture Innovation and ChemE Car because they did not
meet the requirement of being a student organization 45 days per to making the
request.
o Cut all excess requests (i.e. T-shirts, promotions). 9-0-0
o Cut food from all requests. 9-0-0
o Cut to $25 per person - 4 people to a room for hotel costs across the board. 8-1-0
o Finally went back and took a flat rate off of every group equally.
o Some of the groups didn’t request for the hotels and are avoiding the cut. The
question was raised whether that was a fair assessment.
o Being extremely objective
Senator Jensby moved to allocate funding for the academic competition teams. Senator Marquess
seconded the motion. The motion passed 9-0-0.
