Interim Associate Provost for Diversity
Kansas State University invites applications and nominations from current K ‐ State employees for the position of Interim Associate Provost for Diversity.
Reporting to the Provost and Senior Vice President, the interim Associate Provost leads and coordinates strategic relationships and initiatives that advance
the university’s goals for multicultural diversity.
The interim Associate Provost serves as a university advocate promoting enhanced racial and cultural diversity and an inclusive campus climate that fosters academic excellence and understanding among diverse groups.
The interim Associate Provost also directs the operations of the Office of Diversity.

The interim Associate Provost serves as a member of the Provost’s
Executive Team and the President’s Advisory Council.
Major Duties
Diversity Leadership and Program Coordination and Management
1.
Provides leadership and coordination to advance multicultural diversity goals for Kansas State
University, including goals and outcomes defined in the K ‐ State 2025 Visionary Plan and related strategic plans.
2.
Works collaboratively with the university leadership, diversity point people, and the broader university community to shape, develop, implement, and evaluate multicultural diversity programs, particularly in the areas of academic excellence, student success, and fostering an inclusive campus climate.
3.
Oversees the operations of the Office of Diversity with responsibility for staffing, fiscal management, and program planning and implementation.
4.
Be a strong advocate for multicultural students, faculty, and staff and advance the university as a leader and model for diversity in higher education.
5.
Coordinates a wide variety of diversity programming at the university and community level addressing all dimensions of diversity.
6.
Serves as chair of the President’s Commission on Multicultural Affairs.
Student Support
1.
Provides leadership and support working with multicultural student organizations.
2.
Leads, develops and coordinates student success and advising initiatives and programs for multicultural students to promote retention, graduation rates, academic excellence, and provide support throughout their academic career through graduation.
3.
Serves as a key liaison between the academic community and student life on multicultural diversity issues and efforts.
Communication and Reporting
1.
Coordinates university ‐ wide reporting on the status of diversity at Kansas State University, reporting progress on the university multicultural diversity goals and outcomes.
2.
Coordinates the dissemination of information related to multicultural affairs at K ‐ State to administration, faculty, staff, students, and the public.
3.
Acts as “spokesperson” for K ‐ State multicultural diversity initiatives.
Philanthropy, Fundraising, and Engagement
1.
Collaborates with the KSU Foundation, other university leaders, and a variety of constituencies to identify, seek, and secure grant funding, corporate partnerships, and other fundraising opportunities to further advance university diversity initiatives, and manages programmatic initiatives that derive from these efforts.
2.
Maintains strategic relationships with the community, alumni, corporate donors, benefactors, industry, regional and national organizations and more focused on diversity and multicultural affairs.
Required Qualifications
The successful candidate must have a Master’s degree from an accredited institution and three years of experience in higher education setting designing, coordinating or implementing innovative and effective diversity programs or initiatives to promote student learning, retention, and success.
The successful
candidate must also hold the following qualifications.
Success as a collaborator and relationship builder, demonstrating strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to build coalitions and collaborative relationships with a broad range of diverse individuals and groups.
A high level of cultural sensitivity and proven ability to foster diversity and teamwork to create collaborative relationships across culturally diverse groups.
Demonstrated ability to apply knowledge of best practices in areas such as multicultural student retention, academic advising, and fostering a university environment that values diversity and inclusion.
Commitment to and successful programmatic experience with programs or projects to support
multicultural students as well as faculty and staff.
Demonstrated administrative skills, including planning, financial management, and personnel management.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment, tact, and discretion and maintain integrity with sensitive and confidential information.
Demonstrated skills in the areas of cross ‐ cultural communication and conflict resolution.
Knowledge of laws and regulations related to affirmative action, equal opportunity, and discrimination.
Familiarity and experience with Kansas State University and how it functions as an institution.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in development and fundraising through philanthropy or extramural grants and related project administration.
It is expected that the successful candidate will begin the position on January 3, 2016.
Application for the position of or appointment as interim Associate Provost for Diversity will not preclude an individual from consideration for the permanent position.
A national search for a permanent position will be
undertaken in the spring of 2016.
