the westering mountain man.
But this rocky range offered an
alluring fascination for the rugged trappers, due to the abundance of beaver in the numerous rivers. Hear stories of some
of the intrepid adventurers who first pioneered across
the slopes of our local Sierra Nevada. Outdoor educator
Shirley Spencer has lived and worked in the Sierra Nevada
since 1979, and earned her M.S. in Environmental Studies

Jedediah Smith, Kit Carson, Joseph Walker and others who
lived challenging and adventurous lives in the western
part of our nation.

H
ow is technology creating
change in learning styles?
People who were born into this
High Tech World (Digital Natives)
have never known life without
a keyboard or a computer. Then,
there are people who grew up with a pencil and paper but
learned to use the computer (Digital Immigrants). And of
course, there are some who still use a typewriter (Digital
Dinosaurs). Larry Powell, Fresno County Superintendent
of Schools, will share how technology has changed the
way people think, work, and learn. It is definitely “not your
daddy’s school anymore.”

ognitive abilities change in astonishing ways under
hazardous conditions. This is true for victims, eyewitnesses, and law enforcement officers, and a knowledge of
how these processes work, and of
what they can do, can prove to be
enormously important. Professor
Matthew Sharps, author of Processing Under Pressure: Stress, Memory,
and Decision-Making in Law Enforcement, discusses these critical issues
in terms of modern psychology.
Sharps demonstrates the ways in
which the complex dynamics of attention, memory and decision-making interact with highstress contexts to make sense of modern forensic realities
that seem at first glance to make no sense at all. Sharps is

he Osher LIfelong Learning Institute wishes to acknowledge the much-appreciated contributions
of Matt Mileham at the Satellite Student Union and
Craig Rebello from the Craig School of Business. We just
couldn’t do it without them. Thank you for your thoughtful assistance in serving our OLLI members!
W
hat a great year we have had! Thanks to your
recruitment of new members, we exceeded 500
members in 2008-09. And, we recently received notification that we are the recipient of a $1 million endowment
from the Bernard Osher Foundation.
Yes, the good news is that we received the endowment.
However, this means that we will no longer receive the
$100,000 annual grant funds from the Osher Foundation.
Our operating budget will now be contingent upon the
interest accrued on the endowment plus our membership
and activity fees.
Those of us who were involved since the beginning and
who took a chance on a new idea, knew that it
would work. With your continued involvement,
the Fresno OLLI will continue to grow and prosper.
Let’s continue to learn for learning’s sake.
