Please read the information below for details: M.A. in Art Program The M.A. in Art Program provides advanced studies art and design for students who wish to extend their education beyond that of the baccalaureate degree, by creating opportunities for creative and intellectual discovery in studio art, art history, interior design, and art education. It is the leading program in Central California through which students can prepare for professional careers and leadership in studio art, art historical research/writing, teaching at the community college level, further study in M.F.A. and Ph.D. programs, and careers in museums and galleries. Admission Requirements The M.A. in Art degree program assumes preparation equivalent to the undergraduate major (B.A. in Art) at California State University, Fresno. Students with a non-­‐-­‐-­‐art undergraduate degree must meet the Art Major Undergraduate Equivalency http://www.fresnostate.edu/artshum/artanddesign/documents/undergrad_major_equivalent.pdf consisting of 33 units, in order to be considered for full admission to the M.A. in Art program. Students with an undergraduate degree in Interior Design who apply to the M.A. in Art program must meet the Undergraduate Art Equivalency for Interior Design; http://www.fresnostate.edu/artshum/artanddesign/documents/undergrad_interior_design_equivalency.pdf prerequisite coursework consisting of 30 units, to be considered for full admission to the M.A. in Art program. Students with a non-­‐-­‐-­‐art undergraduate degree may be accepted Conditionally to the M.A. in Art program, but shall be required to successfully pass a second Screening Portfolio Review upon completion of the Undergraduate Equivalency, in order to obtain Classified standing or full acceptance to the program. You must first go to csumentor.edu to begin the application process. Submit required test scores (TOEFL or IELS for international students) and transcripts of all college/university work. Submit a complete Portfolio (details by area are listed below) appropriate to your indicated area of interest. Areas of Interest in the M.A. in Art Program include Studio Art, Art History, and Art Education, and Interior Design.
Please enclose all portfolio items in a single binder or envelope, clearly labeled with your name and contact information, and a SASE if you wish materials returned. Portfolios of students accepted by the program will be kept by the Department of Art and Design. Portfolio Requirements by Area. STUDIO ART Applicants to Studio Art must further indicate an area of interest within studio art— choose one from Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, Photography, Ceramics, Sculpture, Crafts/Design or Computer Art. We do not offer a master’s program in Graphic Design. •

CD of recent artwork. Ten (10) jpeg images, max size of 1200 pixels on the long edge, 72 dpi, RGB. Number each image on the file name to correspond with an image list. It is recommended that at least 4 of the works are related to each other, and demonstrate an effort to develop an idea or theme or some focus of development and exploration. o Applicants with time-­‐-­‐-­‐based media should instead submit examples of work on an authored DVD or a Macintosh readable CD or data DVD. Include a minimum of three pieces, the total time of which should be no more than 20 minutes. For pieces longer than 10 minutes, please provide an excerpt. An image list corresponding with artwork (above) & containing: Title of artwork, medium, dimensions, year completed. Introduction/Letter of intent (maximum three pages.) A brief autobiographical statement of your experience as an artist, including a proposed AREA OF INTEREST (see above) and your purpose for study in the M.A. in Art program at CSU, Fresno. Artist’s Statement (maximum three pages.) A brief statement about your artwork, including an explanation of your involvement in research related to your artwork and other issues, such as process, content, context, purpose, significance, meaning, etc. Curriculum Vita, including educational background/degree(s) awarded/school attended/year, list of art exhibitions and/or art-­‐-­‐-­‐related activities, awards/grants, and other professional/work experience. Unofficial Transcripts Recommendations: Three from professionals in the field, past professors, instructors, or others who are knowledgeable of you and your work. ART HISTORY •

For example, if the application deadline for the Fall semester is April 1, applicant portfolios must be received no later than April 15. If the application deadline for the Spring semester is August 31, portfolios must be received no later than September 14. INCOMPLETE PORTFOLIOS WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED.
