MEMORANDUM TO: FR: RE: DA: Richard A. Davey, Secretary & CEO Frank DePaola, Highway Division Administrator Ongoing Work in the MHS Tunnels November 16, 2012 To follow is a summary of maintenance and construction activities performed during the week ending November 3 in the Metropolitan Highway System tunnels. Please feel free to contact me if you need additional information. Overnight work: • • • • • • • • • A contractor continues to demolish the median island between the Eastbound and Westbound sides of I-90, East of the Prudential Tunnel. The contractor is also repairing the boat slab nearby and performing demolition work from the other direction. This involves both day and night work. A contractor continues to repair and replace the spray-on fireproofing material in the I-93 Tunnel (both directions). Recent work was focused on the Dewey Square Tunnel. A contractor is finishing work in a portion of the Prudential Tunnel. In addition to ongoing pavement repairs, concrete repairs, ceiling repairs, boat slab repairs and work on the base slab and joints, the contractor is restoring, repairing and repainting concrete walls in the area of the parcel formerly designated for the Columbus Center project. A contractor is continuing substructure repairs in the Storrow Tunnel Westbound under Leverett Circle. Recent work includes lighting upgrades and boat wall repairs. A contractor is progressing with an inspection of the Ted Williams Tunnel (both directions). A contractor is in the process of installing a new design that replaces the trench drain grate covers throughout the tunnel system. The previous covers were prone to loosening or breaking, and could create hazards by falling into the trench box. MassDOT has nearly finished installation of the new drains. This project is nearing completion. MassDOT continued with overhead concrete repairs and installed support angles on precast panels in the Prudential Tunnel Westbound. The support angles will further strengthen the tunnel ceiling. MassDOT continued installation of station markers on the CANA Tunnel (both directions). The station markers help inspectors to identify the precise section of the tunnel they are inspecting. MassDOT plumbers and a contractor brought in a video scope to inspect a slowdraining drain line in the CANA Tunnel. The video inspection did not reveal the • • • • • • source of the problem. Additional video inspections will occur until the problem is addressed. Installation of station markers is also occurring in the Callahan Tunnel. A contractor will also install the markers in the Sumner Tunnel. MassDOT replaced five cases of bulbs and 3 ballasts, and replaced a pump in the mid-tunnel pump room, in the I-90 Westbound Tunnel. MassDOT repaired parts on three cameras and replaced a cable on a fourth, in the O’Neill Tunnel Northbound. MassDOT removed approximately 300 feet of handrails from the tunnel system, in the area of Ramp L-CS (Leverett Circle to I-93 Southbound). MassDOT is inspecting (and replacing as necessary) fire extinguishers and safety equipment in the Callahan Tunnel, in the Sumner Tunnel, in the I-90 Connector Tunnel and in the Ted Williams Tunnel Westbound. This is part of an annual inspection of safety equipment. A contractor is performing ceiling work above the hung ceiling in the Ted Williams Tunnel (both directions). This work will be ongoing.
