'Get up offa that thing, and dance till you feel better'. You're right! It's that old James Brown classic and they follow it word by word. To anyone who thought that street dancers can only be found in the streets of New York, you have been misled! Meet Urban Echo Troupe, also known as U.E.T. A local hip hop crew that has been taking various stages by storm for the past five years. 'We've been puppets, zombies and robots, we've looked serious and sexy... anything as long as it's expressive and creative' They have danced at fundraising events, local television shows, done performances on stage like Adventures in Dance by Paul Curmi Dance Company and other local events including Notte Bianca 2008 and 2009. They have also been back-up dancers for various local artists including singers like Brooke and Thea amongst others. You might be asking: who the heck are these guys? Under the direction of dancer and choreographer Stuart, U.E.T is a group of energetic young people with different dance training backgrounds, who share a common passion for hip hop. Dedication shown through hours of practice and a unique crave to perform, defines this dynamic crew. Funky music and originality are always a must during their performances. In fact, their inspiration comes from the freshest hip hop tunes and the work of international choreographers they've seen on TV Shows and movies. With regard to their style, 'anything expressive is worth a try' from old school hip hop such as locking, popping and breaking to most recent new style and Krumping just to mention a few. By combining old school hip hop culture with their own style, Urban Echo Troupe are taking street dance to an entire new level. So keep an eye on their facebook group and don't miss their upcoming events. Modern dancers reject the limitations of classical ballet and favor movements derived from the expression of their inner feelings. During the 1900's, European dancers began rebelling against the rigid rules of classical ballet. Turning against the structured techniques, costumes and shoes of ballet, these dancers favored a more relaxed, free style of dancing. Modern dance pioneers often danced in bare feet and revealing costumes. In the United States, several dance pioneers paved the way for American modern dance, including the legendary Martha Graham. Modern dance encourages dancers to use their emotions and moods to design their own steps and routines. It is not unusual for modern dancers to invent new steps for their routines, instead of following a structured code of technique. Another characteristic of modern dance in opposition to ballet is the deliberate use of gravity. Whereas classical ballet dancers strive to be light and airy on their feet, modern dancers often use their body weight to enhance movement. Latin/Rhythm dances are commonly danced to contemporary Latin American music, and, with the exception of a few travelling dances (for example, Samba and Paso Doble), couples do not follow the line of dance but perform their routines more or less in one spot. In competitions, the women are often dressed in short-skirted latin outfits while the men are outfitted in tightfitting shirts and pants, the goal being to emphasize the dancers' leg action and body movements. Latin dances are generally faster-paced, more sensual, and have more rhythmic expression. The latin dances are for couples, typically a man and a woman. Partners sometimes dance in a closed, tight position, and sometimes hold only one hand. Latin dancing, as Latin music, is sultry and physical. Quick paced rhythms and playful movements make the various Latin dances endlessly entertaining, sometimes even breathtaking. The Latin dances are derived from the music to which they are danced. The component of the music that most differentiates the dances is their fast or slow tempo. The Malta Tai Chi Society was founded in 1989 with the primary intention of teaching the Chinese Art of Tai Chi Chuan in Malta. Since its inception the Society organised numerous courses for various categories of people. Ongoing classes are held weekly at the centre in the Malta China Friendship Society Building in Valletta and at the Garden of Serenity in Santa Lucia. Instructors from the Society have given courses for senior citizens, drug addicts attending rehabilitation therapies and even special courses for people with special needs. The Society teaches various aspects of Tai Chi Chuan namely the empty handed, the sword form and pushing hands. The style adopted is the Traditional Yang style one of the five families of Tai Chi practiced around the world. Tai Chi is a Chinese art intended to give the practitioner better health both physical and mental. It is based on slow, graceful, balanced and coordinated movements which if practiced properly create a harmonious relation between body and mind. Tai Chi makes part of the Traditional Chinese Medicine. The participants in this demonstration will be Mr Michael Micallef, Mr Alan Saliba Gauci, Ms Maryanne Gauci and Mr Glenn Buhagiar. Please join their facebook group for updates and news of their group. Ms Fenech will also acknowledge Mr John Paul Fenech, Golden Medal winner in the Olympics. It all started via a conversation at the end of the University of Malta staff league reception between Ms Jacqueline Fenech and Mr Andrew Decelis, Directors of HR & IPES respectively.....what about organising a University of Malta staff tournament in aid of charity? And that's how Karen Cacciattolo and Oliver Mallia came into the picture. In the space of approximately two weeks they had to organize the tournament which mainly involved recruiting teams, booking of catering services and football grounds. Oliver was in charge of the former whilst Karen took care of the football grounds and catering services. Both Oliver and Karen found plenty of support from the participating teams, Malta University Holdings Company (as regards free booking of pitches) and J&M Catering (as regards provision of stand with drinks & snacks). By the 5th July, the day of the tournament, we had managed to recruit five teams, namely, Gateway, ICT, IT Services, IPES and Mixed Staff. Over fifty members of staff put their skills on the 5-a-side pitches in this Football Tournament to help raise money for a charitable institution. After some keenly contested first round matches, the semi-finals were set; IPES vs ICT and IT Services vs Mixed Staff respectively. In the first semi-final, IPES had to make a spirited comeback as they were a goal down in the first couple of minutes of the game against a well-organized ICT team but they finally won the match 4 - 2. In the other semi-final, Mixed Staff & IT Services shared the spoils in an exciting 1 1 draw but the former had to bow their heads as the IT Services keeper denied the Mixed Staff penalty takers on three occasions with the final score being 2 - 4 after the penalty kicks. The final of this tournament was going to be a repeat of the University of Malta staff league, in the sense that the sporting rivals, IPES and IT Services, were once again the finalists. Well, following a balanced match, IPES managed to take sporting revenge over IT Services with a 3 - 2 score line but at the end of the day, the winners were not the IPES team but the Ursuline Sisters of Saint Angela Merici crèche of Sliema. In fact, the UoM staff tournament helped raise €260 for such a wealthy cause. 8 Arts and Crafts Stands Paintings demonstration will be provided by Mr Anton Abela – Department of Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics – Faculty of Medicine & Surgery Personalised cards demonstration will be provided by Ms Jennifer Vella – Certificate in Foundation Studies Course – Office of the Registrar Costume Jewellery demonstration will be provided by Ms Annette Arnaud – Academic Programmes Quality & Resources Unit.
