PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Dear Members and Friends
As we move into the new academic year, 2013-2014, we must set our mind on new objectives that give a new direction to our Association.
Our Association is withering on the vine because our membership is aging and also dwindling. If we do not change in a timely fashion it would threaten the survival of the Association that has a documented history going back to 1920’s! An Association that has been around for nearly 90 years holds the record for longevity that is perhaps unbroken in a University that is not much older!
The California State University Women’s Association must expand, grow and change to reflect the diversity that is a characteristic feature of the University. To do so our Association must include members from all the ethnic groups which it comprises. The Latino population is the fastest growing in the Central Valley. Our Association should take note of this new reality and strive to recruit members from this subset. We must also enlist the support of the black faculty and staff on campus. I urge our members to come together on this key issue of diversification.
Our second objective for the new academic year is to increase membership. If we open up our
Association to Latinos and Blacks, we will have achieved more members, many, many more, while also diversifying our roster.
Jean Hull and I have taken the first steps toward accomplishing both objectives. We have met with the Supervisor of the Women’s Resource group on campus and Corinne Flores of the Social Services Department. Recruiting new members must be the central theme at the Fall Welcome Back
Coffee.
President Welty and his wife Sharon have been very supportive of our Association in the past. We anticipate the same support from our new President, Dr. Joseph Castro and his wife. The wives of past President have been members of our Association.
It is our common responsibility to pass this historic Association on to future generations of CSUF women in a more stable condition than we found it. I urge you all to join me in this venture.
Welcome back and see you at the Fall Welcome Back Coffee on Saturday, October 5, 2013 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 pm. (Business meeting from 10:00-11:00) where we will honor our scholarship recipients.
Your President for the Women’s Association.
