Unavailable for 2 working days. – 25th April 2014 – Problem reported by user. Took 3 working days (5 calendars days) to resolve • At all times our priorities have been security closely followed by restoration of the service UCL Data Safe Haven User Group – 9th June 2014 11 Service Disruption – April: Background • Users were able to login but received an error when trying run a desktop or application • Reported Friday morning • Immediate investigation and attempts to fix failed to resolve problem • Started critical incident procedure, including communications to all users • Technical team prioritised fixing this over all over work • We involved our third party support company • Technical team worked throughout the weekend to resolve the problem • Service was restored Tuesday afternoon UCL Data Safe Haven User Group – 9th June 2014 12 Service Disruption – April: Causes • The system is complex with lots of interdependencies between components • Evolutionary changes could impact other components • The security component had been configured so tightly that they were interfering with the correct operation of other parts of the system • There were some components that required patching to fix obscure and not widely known bugs UCL Data Safe Haven User Group – 9th June 2014 13 Service Disruption – April: Resolution Immediate • Fixed security configuration to avoid interfering with correct operation • Built additional domain controllers • Fixed multiple configuration anomalies Planned improvements • Built a new instance of system from bottom up in parallel to live service (swap over to live in June) • Install a better monitoring and control system UCL Data Safe Haven User Group – 9th June 2014 14 Encryption Clinics and USB Amnesty • Drop in clinics provide support and advice for encrypting laptops, and other devices • Promote Data Safe Haven services • Support enrolment and transfer of data to Data Safe Haven • Provide good practice advice • Swap unencrypted USB device for hardware encrypted USB devices (300 x 4Gb iStorage devices funded by IT for SLMS) • Support for transferring data to new devices • Planned for next term, multiple locations and times UCL Data Safe Haven User Group – 9th June 2014 15 Service questions?
