Applications are invited for the post of Masters or Doctoral Research Student to form part of the Mechanics of Welding and Joining Technologies research team at University of Malta. The selected candidate/s will be expected to work and conducted their research studies on the research theme entitled “Fabrication of Lightweight Assemblies – Modelling , Experimental and Suimulation (FLAMES)”, which is coordinated by the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Malta and is in partnership with a number of international collaborators such as British Aerospace Engineering Systems Ltd (BAE Systems Ltd). 2. For the Masters Research, applicants must be in possession of a first degree in engineering. For the Doctoral Research, applicants must be in possession of a Masters degree in engineering or a related discipline. Preference will be given to applicants who posses knowledge and experience in numerical modelling of thermo-mechanical manufacturing processes via finite element analysis. 3. This full-time post is for a period and stipend as follows: Masters Research: 1 Year at €6,000 p.a. Doctoral Research: 3 Years at €8,000 p.a. The Masters or Doctoral Research Student/s will be responsible for the execution of a number of tasks related to the research theme entitled “Fabrication of Lightweight Assemblies – Modelling , Experimental and Suimulation (FLAMES)”, which is coordinated by the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Malta and is in partnership with the BAE Systems Ltd. 2. The research looks into the mechanics of welding and joining technologies through experimental and numerical analysis with the aim of: Investigating different welding fabrication procedures associated with joining of stiffeners, penetrations and hangers to thin plate ship structures. Understanding the effect of outfit welding on thin plate bulkheads of ship structures Identifying the optimal procedure leading to minimal distortion and residual stresses. The appointee is expected to enrol in the University of Malta’s Masters or Ph.D. programme and his/her main duties shall include: a) To conduct lab-based research under the stewardship of an academic mentor(s); b) To assist the academic mentor(s) in research-related activities, including but not limited to: Researching and reviewing academic publications relevant to the research topic, Analysis of research findings, Writing of scientific publications and reports based on results, Preparation of conference poster or presentation, Externalisation activities relating to the project; c) To partake in day-to-day management and maintenance of the research laboratory; d) To conduct aspects of the research studies in foreign research institutions. 4. The appointee is expected to conduct this research at such places and during such hours as may be determined by the University authorities. 5. The selection procedure will involve: a. scrutiny of qualifications and experience claimed and supported by testimonials and/or certificates (copies to be included with the application); and b. an interview and / or extended interview. 6. This post is for a period of one year (Masters) or three years (PhD), which will be subject to a probationary period and to the provisions of the Statutes, Regulations and Bye-Laws of the University of Malta which are now or which may hereafter be in force.
