Guidelines to completing Point 6 “Proposed Research”

NO MORE than 1 side of A4 setting out:

(a) Title

(b) Objectives :

Why the topic is relevant and what you hope to discover.

(c) Background :

This should include two elements, both of which are deemed to be a required part of a successful application:

One is fuller information on why your topic is significant, brief preliminary discussion of the relevant literature you have identified so far, and a comment on other sources of material you might look for.

The second should comment on where you want to carry out the study and why as well as any other relevant points which support your choice.

(d) Research Questions :

Three or four specific questions that you hope to address in the research.

(e) Methods :

How you will actually carry out the project. You need to be as precise as possible here, just saying ‘participant observation’ is not enough. Think about the methods that would help to uncover answers to the questions you have posed. Give some idea of numbers (of informants, interviews, life histories, etc) wherever possible.

In the real world we know that at this stage there is a number of uncertainties and you may not have full answers to these questions. You may feel your project is evolving and you are not really ready to be so specific. But, also in the real world of funding applications, we are always asked to make these sorts of assessment ahead of time and it is an important skill to practise. Your proposal should be as convincing as possible at this stage. We are all fully aware that it may change and be modified in practice.

Please submit – NO LATER than Friday 4 March 2016 – to the main

Departmental Office. Submissions later than this date will be rejected.
